    Hi All,

Picking up my '92 ZXR250 this weekend. Will need a full rebuild, she's done 100k km with many learner owners.

My query: anything specific I should be on the lookout for?

For example, on the 3LN, in the valvetrain there are rubber seals which wear out and can cause no oil pressure if they fail. Anything like this in the ZXR? Common issues I should look out for?

    Thank you!

For the ZXR the biggest worry is cam chain and tensioner. The chain is tiny even compared to other 250's and the tensioners are not a great design. You can order the parts for a GPX250 (body, plunger, springs, bearing) and it will fit. Valve clearances at the same time, due to how high these things rev, age, and previous (ab)use.

Carbs are another area, but less so than the FZR's and GSXR's. Mainly airbox seals, fuel t-piece o-rings and air passage o-rings. Usual old bike problems of vacuum lines, carb manifolds, fuel tap/tank etc.

The 18" rear rim can be a bit of a gotchya for tyres, Dunlop no longer do the GPR300's, but Alpha 14's are available and probably the best performance tyre you can get. Just not so great on the longevity. As I work in the industry I was able to get sets of those for $300 AUD and they would last me about 6 months before the rears were square and the fronts dry rotted.

Charging system has a habit of going out as well, the regulator is bolted to the frame under the tank. It's a 6 wire unit, most are 5 (three AC phases from the generator plus battery positive/earth), some sort of voltage sense or something, never figured it out. If the battery voltage is low enough it may not turn the headlight on with the engine running as it should.

Headlight globes are weird on these as well, not a standard H4, you will burn the switchblock wiring out if you use a 55/60 watt globe, I think these use H6 45/45 watt globes. Whatever they are, they're the same as the CBR250RR MC22 - ordered some from a Honda dealer in the past.

Other than the specifics, just the usual old bike stuff... bearings (steering/wheels/sprocket carrier/swingarm/shock knuckle), running gear/consumables and so on.

    Just another question...

I used cmsnl for my MC22 and NSR projects, but it seems they don't have parts for the ZXR250? Xcite doesn't stock either. Where can I buy OEM parts?

Specifically engine parts, shell bearings and the like.

Megazip and impex. Searching for ZXR250 might not get any hits, you need to search the model code eg. ZX250C, ZX250A etc.
