My 3LN3 is running a bit hot, seems to get very close to the red zone in traffic, fan kicks on very late (usually just above 3/4 on the gauge) and that seems to keep it just out of the red zone. My question is, do we think this is the fan kicking in late, or thermostat? Should my bike be running that hot generally? And what controls when the fan turns on? Also turning off the headlights gives the fan some more oomph, which also seems to drop the temp quick. Any way I can fix this to have the extra oomph all the time? Thanks all!
If you fan is not spinning fast enough then maybe a relay with some heavier wire would help, but the first question is how hot is the engine really running. For this you need a proper temp gauge or heat reading gun. How do you know that the gauge on the dash is accurate? How old is the sender for the gauge signal and how accurate is it? Maybe your fan switch is getting old, they are cheap to replace. Need an accurate temp before worrying about what you gauge reads (very few are accurate from new).
I am getting steam coming out of the breather hose, not sure exactly which one but it's not coming from the overflow tank, it comes out just near the left foot peg. (Photo attached of pipe, red circle where steam comes out) Will definitely try the temp gauge when I get a chance, do you have one you recommend or just a cheapy from eBay. I have topped up radiator fluid (only took about 100mls) and plan to do a flush and chance fluid, and will check thermostat, but thinking that's not it? @G1D1, that is the crankcase breather, might just be fume's from valve stem seal's or ring's, or if it is steam could be a bit of moisture because it's sat for a while and might come good after a decent run. The steam isn't coming from the bottom of the waterpump is it ? It might have a leaking mechanical water seal, and by the look of the bit of oil under the waterpump the oil seal for the bearing is weeping a bit too. I have the same non contact thermometer that Murdo has, i reckon they are accurate. You could try taking the temp sender out of the thermostat housing and cleaning it up, and at the same time clean up the earth terminal for it too A new one is cheap from china The fan switch is located near the temp sensor in the thermostat housing. My fan's kick in when it's close to that temp reading if it's been idling for a long time. Might pay to disconnect all you wiring plug's and socket's and use some dielectric grease in them to make sure they have good contact's same on any earth's My FZR had a bit of steam come out the exhaust when i first bought it but it doesn't use water, sometime's when it's sat for a week or 2 during winter it will steam a little too
Yeah @my67xr that's what I was thinking, however it only happens when the temp is right up there, hence why I think it's steam from getting hot. Only happens after lots of traffic lights in a row or you know, city traffic, doesn't happen just cruising. But I too am interested why steam was coming from the crankcase, not the overflow or anything like that. But when the fan kicks in it seems to drop back down gradually. Hence why I am thinking if the fan would kick in stronger and earlier, might avoid this? I noticed the weepy water pump, I saw your post about this and plan to tackle that at some stage, but steam is definitely coming out that hole on the breather! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Maybe drop the oil and do an oil change, might see some water in it ? Are you checking the water level with the bike upright ? It will take another 150ml's or so compared to checking it with it on the side stand. Could be a sticky thermostat like Murdo said ^. Sweet, plan is to drop the engine oil and do a coolant flush, will check thermostat, sensor and temp switch whilst I'm at it. Its a good start, thanks guys!
