When I was getting my RE license, I posed the question to my Qride trainer .. am I too big for  250cc bike, should I wait for LAMS  to come in and get a bigger bike. My logic was that I weigh a smidgen over 100kgs and a 250 might struggle under load.

The response I received was an unresounding "NO" and that 2 fiddy would be fine and that many 250's will allow a 100kg plus rider to easily sit on 100kms per hour on a highway and have plenty of power to move through traffic. My Qride training bike was a 2007 Honda VTR250 and I found it had ample power for a learner, while on my RE license  I owned a CBR250RR,  Honda VT250 Spada and a couple of Suzuki Across's  all of which were and continue to be heaps of fun to ride.

Even now as I have my open license and a non LAMS approved Suzuki SV650s in the garage, I still find that I enjoy riding my Suzuki GSX250F Across for my daily commute to work.

So do you need a larger capacity bike.... ? the answer really lies in what you feel comfortable riding. The LAMS scheme has introduced some interesting larger capacity models that sneak in under the power to weight ratio, but you have to be happy with your choice.  My advice to you is to buy a bike that feels right to you, don't buy a bike that  your friends think is cool, as more than likely you wont enjoy it as much, and remember, the top 2 selling roads bikes in 2010 was the humble CT110 postie bike followed closely by the Kawasaki Ninja 250R.

I concur with your instructor, 250cc bikes today have ample power to handle not only the city runs but the highway as well. I think back to when I got my first 250 and how quick it was, today my weight has jumped up a little, 25kg compared to then and the 250 still does the job so well. The natural progression in life is (Bigger is better) and although we buy larger capacity bikes, a soft spot always remain for the much lighter 250cc bikes.
Doesn't really matter what you ride, the main thing is to ENJOY THE RIDE.
