    Hi guys,

I am new to this site, so I apologise in advance if this is in the wrong section or anything as such.

I have a Suzuki Bandit GSF250S (GJ77A). I have had this since January. Since then I have had it serviced (by a shop [I am not very skilled mechanically]). Just the last week or so the bike has had problems starting cold...aka I would have to run start it or sit there on the throttle for five mins before it would idle by itself. Finally today it died and I cant get the thing started again. It just clicks over constantly and the engine might occasionally kick in but then dies straight away.

Just looking for any thoughts on what might be the issue. I have taken out and cleaned the spark plugs, and I have made sure I have plenty of fuel.

Another issue that may/may not be related...its been happening since before I got the bike...It has absolutely no low end power. Anything under 4000rpm and the bike does not move. This may just be the bike, Im not sure, so it would be great if someone could confirm.

Thanks in advance. Again, I apologise if this is in the wrong place or anything. Like I said, this is my first post.

Could be lots of things, but lets discuss everything outside the motor. You checked the spark plugs so that's a start. What about the air filter and fuel supply? See if you can start the bike with the fuel cap open. Is the fuel tank rusty inside? Check the condition of the fuel filter or if there is one on the bike at all.

You might also want to take a look at the carbies. The bike could be running rich or lean, if its bogging down then likely rich. If you are confident taking the carbs off, check for pooled fuel in the intake ports. If there is fuel accumulating then you might have a stuck float, or the float height needs adjusting.

On the engine side of things, it could be low compression. Generally speaking only 2 things cause low compression: tight valve clearances and worn piston rings.

If you're confident with taking spark plugs out, beg/borrow/steal a compression tester and compare readings to the service manual.

The bike still doesnt start with the fuel cap open. Fuel tank is fine. I have organised with a mate to borrow his compression tester so I will have a look at that over the weekend. Only issue in regards to that is that I dont have a service manual. Where would I be able to find one of these? I have searched online and cant find any for download, unless I have to pay.

    Thanks

:welcome: to the fun. You have a bandit. You're in for plenty of that!

The only site I know of in english is here http://www1.synapse.ne.jp/s-hara/bandit/ban-spece.html

My old GSF250P had valve clearance issues, and I've heard of 3 or 4 other bandits with the same thing. Symptoms you are describing seem to line up so the compression test is a good idea. It could be a combination of things like pilot hole blockage etc but because it ran before you've probably got fuel/air/spark and the gradual onset of compression lost sorta fits your situation. Try giving it a push start, if it goes with the motor spinning fast enough I'd say that would be it - almost anything can start with low compression if the motor is revving fast enough to compensate for the loss in pressure.

There are a few manuals around but most are in Japanese and depends on your engine variant, mine was a GJ74A but I ran off a GJ73A/GJ72A and the Bandit 400 manual. I think the 72A and B4 are available on this site with premium membership (like $5).

Unfortunately these bikes are hard to find clear information on... especially on things like timing etc but if you know the principles you can wing it a bit. Good luck, keep the photos/questions coming if you want to dig in!

    Hey Camcam

Can you post up some pics of your plugs when you do the comp test, quite possible your plugs have fouled, although I would have to agree with joker that you could have a blocked jet or 2, does your bike have an fuel filter fitted ?

    Hi all,

Sorry for the late reply. Only got onto the bike today.

Turns out the issue was with the spark plugs. Went out and bought new spark plugs, stuck them in and yeah. She works. Hopefully this can help others having a similar issue.

A concern for me is that I took it to a dealer a couple weeks ago to get it serviced. I thought they would have changed the spark plugs or at least checked them.

    Thanks for your help.
