    Hi guys,

i have just picked up a friends 92' across. the bike has sat idle for the past 2 almost 3 years, so it is time to bring it back to life. (hopefully)

the bike was running fine before it was "stored", previous owner put new tyres on, rode home and was too scared to ride again.

the battery is dead (given), i fear fuel was left in the tank (maybe rusted now), i know the oil has sat in there this whole time too.

check list will be the carbies (level expert now after doing mine), fuel pump and lines/hose, bleed breaks etc...

Big question is, Is there something (product/oil) i can pour into the bike and let it sit, drain and repeat. Fear is, the engine being all clogged up etc...

    Ideas anyone ?

will be starting the strip down of the bike this weekend.

    cheers jess
    (thinking out aloud)

    Hey Jess

Was it left outside or undercover ? I have bought plenty of bikes that have sat for years and the oil hasnt been too bad, its generally the ones that sat outside where moisture has effected the oil that can be tricky. My advice is dump the oil, if it comes out brown \ black but is smooth then let it all drain out and replace with fresh oil. If comes out sludgy then get as much as you ca then refill with a synthntic oil for start up , run for abit, then look at replacing it again with fresh stuff. If you are worried about it being seized, pull the spark plugs out and pour a teaspoon oil down each barrel , leave for a few days then attempt to start it.

You can dump the fuel in the tank by removing the fuel line from the petcock and set the petcock to reserve, if the fuel comes out rusty then your tank might be affected.

Once you have it running, might pay to run a can of Three Bond Engine conditioner through it which will remove all the excess carbon build up

    1. Warm engine to normal operating temperature. Shake can well.
    1. Stop engine, remove a convenient vacuum hose from intake manifold/throttle body.
    1. Spray for approx. 15 seconds.
    1. Allow to stand for 5 minutes before proceeding to next step.
    1. Start engine and accelerate enough so that the engine doesn't stall. Empty remainder of can into intake manifold/throttle body.
    1. When can is nearly empty stop engine and allow remainder of conditioner to sit for a further 5 minutes.
    1. Re-attach vacuum hose.
    1. Start vehicle and run for minimum 2 minutes before road testing vehicle.

make sure you bleed the brakes, a few years outside and the brake fluid will be mush

My bandit was outside for a period of time, when I drained the oil it was lumpy. If you're going to crank it I'd say invest in some oil (I find yamalube quite good) before you do it so you don't push it through the engine. I personally wouldn't worry about it being in the engine though, it's probably mostly drained into the sump.

When I took my head off there was only the new oil in the engine so yeh. Drain the carbies and ensure you use fresh fuel though, nothing like stale fuel to bugger your rings.

will defiantly do weekend weekly updates (have the friend/owner of the bike work on it with me) so it might take some time.

cheers again for all the advice so far, nice to confirm my newbie thoughts :)

    Hi Jessica
By the sound of things, you've got your work cut out. Any bike that has sat out for that length of time is going to generate issues. The mortal enemy is moisture, it is destructive and caused so many problems.
I would drain the fuel and oil to start with. Put fresh fuel and oil and hook up a battery and she if the bike will start.
If you can get it running you are on your way. Look forward to hearing how you get on. Good luck!

When bikes sit for a long time with fuel in the carbs this is what you get.

This is also in the jets and the needle and seat. I use general purpose paint thinners to soak all the bits in for a couple of hours, then blow clean with air hose.

So the fairings have come off and made a few spiders move out. Fuel has been drained, and overall check list/ buy list has been written up.

Waiting on oil to come before anymore work.

Looks like some one has played with the carbies alot. Many forien ties and clamps.

But i have good faith she will start. Pulling the carbies out next weekend. image.jpg

    Update,

Oil has been drained. No lumps in sight so feeling good about it. New oil and filter are in

Carbies are out. Noticed bright green liquid hanging out in them, not sure what it is.

    Found a tear in :(

Going to order a new part.

Everything else looks pretty good. High hopes this baby will start.

Testing fuel pump in the morning.

The problem sometimes is the diaphragm is sold as an 'assembly' ....which means it includes the slide , which makes it expensive.
    Part # 13500-34A00

As Chris mentioned , try the dealer first with the part number and ask if u can get the diaphragm seperate

That was a decent tear, need that replaced. Dealers vary from place to place, get on the blower and try a few.
