Help Buddy brought over 1988 Honda VTR250... vacuum line problem

    So my buddy asked me to get his bike going... problem is that his vacuum lines were all disconnected and the carbs not on the bike...

    first thing i found was someone had sucked tank sealer into the carbs... after cleaning the carbs out and installing a rebuild kit installed the carbs, HOPING that I could tell where the vacuum lines went... no such luck... so here we are... I got no clue where they go

    there is a vacuum line on the rear cylinder carb boot...

    a random vacuum line running down under the battery area, this connects to a circle with 3 lines coming out...

    Someone on vtr250.org may be able to help you.
    I'm only guessing that one vacuum line will go from intake manifold to the vacuum port on the fuel tap, but no idea on the second one.

    I managed to get it to start.... still not clear on the routing... I know the two larger ones are in fact overflows/vents, but where do the rest really go?

    Hi Eric,

    Wow, that's a bit of a mess.

    Not 100% sure with the particular bike you're working on, but normally the front carb boot is plugged into the fuel petcock to create vacuum to open the fuel flow. The rear boot is normally sealed off. You've correctly identified the fuel bowl vents and the hoses that come from them can go anywhere to atmosphere. All that other tubing seems like an after thought or it's a California model with additional bits to meet EPA regs. If you disconnect everything and block off the vacuum tubes, you should be able to run the bike from an auxiliary fuel supply that's gravity fed. Both carbs have a choke mechanism, so just check that's working properly as they're hard to start with only one choke working.
