Interesting method I read about to "restore" hardened or out of shape rubber carby boots and similar things ..... boil them in engine coolant!

Of course we know hot water softens rubber but the coolant has the added softeners/conditioners and chemicals to impregnate the rubber on a more long term basis.

Simmering them in coolant overnight in an old crockpot or slow cooker sounded like the best method. (then hide the pot in your workshop so the wife doesnt cook that stew in it afterwards)

Heres some references to similar methods....

I have some spare boots and my airbox rubbers are out of shape so I guess its time for some more science experiments! :thumb_ups:

Have you given any consideration to a couple of chillies, might make it heat up quicker :lolsign:
Only joking, curious to see the outcome tomorrow.

The suspense is killing me, what happened to the stew in the slow cooker, you know the one with the wonderful fragrance. Did the boots shrink and now fit a small 50cc bike or worse?? Come on, let us know!

    :lolsign:

yea sorry mate, I pulled them out early this morning to let them cool and dry....they are still the same size and didnt turn green! .... but I havnt had a chance to get back and really check out what happened......having new equivalent parts for comparison would be great ( but then if we had new bits we wouldnt need to be trying this !) ....but Ill pull out some equivalent old parts to compare.

I simmered them on low and its only cheap readymix SCA coolant which is probably 90% water.

If the results are poor Im going to try with pure coolant and maybe on high.

I also want to try the airbox to carby boots on the Fizzer as they are a little stiff but more "out of shape"

    Stay tuned! :D

The airbox to carby boots are the ones I'm having difficulty with as they have hardened and it's not easy to get everything squared up. I await with anticipation GI slow cooking lesson number 2. :lolsign:

Havnt done the second course yet.....need to pick up some concentrate coolant instead of the watered down stuff.
I now have my carbs off so Ill have my airbox > carb boots to try ..... which are mongrel things to get on as they are a little hard and out of shape.

    Stay tuned!

    Ok ... update needed

Sadly, even after boiling in concentrate and leaving them for days, in normal temps they are still hard as ****

When they came out of boiling liquid they were awesome .... as seen in the pic
But went hard after cooling down of course as we know just heat softens rubber.
The positive is that they seem to be the right 'shape' now ..... 1 was particularly skewed on 1 edge as it had not been fitted correctly previously and clamped down like that for a long period.
I will definately be heating them up with very hot water when refitting to just make it easier to get everything in the right place.

I couldn't see how the glycol would do anything to the rubber, it doesn't do anything to radiator hoses, but the heat will soften them. I use hot air gun (man's hairdrier) to soften those type of rubbers before refitting them.

I guess the difference is Grey that carb boots are not the same type of 'rubber' that radiator hoses are made of. Years ago used a piece of rad hose for a carb inlet on a stationary motor and it swelled and split because of the petrol. The carb boots and similar pieces in contact with fuel are more of a plastic type rubber and would not be affected by the glycol. That article about using Wintergreen Oil with the solvent to leach it into the rubbers may have some merit. If I find some I may give it a go.
