The other day I went for a gentle cruise on a road I know well, and got dumped by a gravel patch. Turns out they'd resealed this section of road recently but there were no signs up warning of loose stones, so when I came around a corner at a cautious 40km/h (I did notice the change in seal but didn't realise how fresh it was) I promptly hit the ground. Ruined $1000 worth of gear and shredded half my bike.
I'm okay (bruised and sore) and the bike still runs almost perfectly, but I'm thoroughly pissed off. I only just got the bike back together after a full fork service. Grumpy.

    Casualties:
    Tank
    Left handlebar
    All controls on left handlebar
    Left mirror
    Gear shift lever
    Speedo and tacho
    Left rear panel
    Seat (holes)
Headlight surround (but not the glass??)
    Both left indicators
Whatever mechanism stops the bars from turning too far left
    Subframe?
    Front fender?
    ??? who knows what else
    Helmet (LS2 Arrow R EVO)
    Jacket (Dririder Apex 4)
    Pants (Bullitt Covec something something)
    Left boot (Dririder iRide 3)
    My pride
All the time and effort I put into repairing, servicing, overhauling this bike
All the time and mental effort I put into not being killed by other idiot road users

    Be careful out there, friends.

Glad you're OK. Unfortunate for the bike, that absolutely destroyed your gauge cluster.

Glad you took pictures. When the council does work like this , they must have signs placed out in both direction's to warn you of loose surface. This was the practice when i was on the road gang's.I think i'd be making some phone call's myself.

I changed them to full images so dont apologise :D ... I hate thumbnails ... I like to see photos quickly as Im reading the text

Good u posted photos of the event .... not much fun but a reminder of how fallible we can be
If I ever see any 'new work' I immediately look for gravel and slow right down ... and then ride in the car 'wheel tracks' till its past

That road doesnt look like its been done just recently to me but more like a shite job with way too much loose gravel left .... new work usually shows more definite marked car tracks pretty quickly

Summit Road (between Gebbies and Dyers Passes, Christchurch) gets blasted by speedy boys in their dad's cars all day and all night (including as I was standing there waiting for a trailer) and it's hard to judge from a few phone camera photos, but I would say it was a week or so old at the most. Not super gravelly but with definite patches of loose, coarse chip. There's tar all over my gear, and it was a cold day. I've ridden plenty of crappy road surfaces (that's all we've got around here) including fresh re-seal, but this time the bike just immediately fell out from under me.

Appreciate all your helpful responses BTW. Posted the same thing on the KiwiBiker forum asking if I should contact the council or something and got told I should've taken my earphones out, I'm a computer retard because their 20yo forum won't upload images, and someone should've swept the road for me.

Glad that you're OK with only a damaged pride that will heal and bikes can always be repaired and riding gear replaced

ouch, least your ok, thats the main thing, bikes can always be rebuilt, riders cannot.
