Wow. I am more in awe now. A 4-stroke 250cc running low 10's.

Okay, so according to this thread...

    http://www.accessnorton.com/surprising-engine-modification-t11787.html

...Mick did some very serious mods to the engine and it was running on a 85% nitro/methane mixture. The bike was basically a top fueler albeit in a very small capacity. I don't fully understand all the mods that are covered in the thread, but the 360 degree mod they talk about seems to be turning the twin into a "big bang" engine. I expect some of the more learned people on this forum will make more sense of the running the engine backwards and ignition setting mods.

By going to 360 degree, the engine will be breathing IN on one cylinder or the other which gives smoother intaking from the blower. With the 180 engine there is two intake pulses together, then two dead strokes when no intaking will happen but the blower is still pushing in mixture.

Changing the engine to a 360 made sense as it is more efficient, you get one ignition cycle on each crank rotation, the 180 crank on a twin produces an irregular ignition cycle; 1 on a half cycle and one on 1.5 cycles. 180 cranks are best in two strokes as you get an ignition every half rotation.

Reversing the motor's rotation eliminated the need for an intermediate gear between the crank and clutch to get the gearbox rotating the right way.

Thanks Murdo, that's the last piece of the jigsaw. I've never worked with 'blowers' but what you said makes perfect sense, all my work was with road racing.

I've heard of people re-phasing (not sure if that's the right term) engines so that a 4-cyl ends up having 2 cylinders firing at the same time. I thought this was called a "big bang". Someone said a Kiwi did it to a Hayabusa for drag racing and it was quite successful. So, the outright world record for a 250cc drag bike is 9.8 seconds. Do we all agree?

Would mean making a new crank and camshafts, re configuring the ignition and a whole lot of work for not a lot of gain.

I believe the NZ guy cut the cams and the crank and then welded them to facilitate the "big bang" cycle. Is that possible?

Possible, but so much work that it would be less to make a new one.

I'm guessing there's a lot of work whatever you do. Given it took Mick Hand 20 years to get the his ultimate goal i'll be 75 by the time I get to his level! I'll be more than happy to run an 11 something on any 250cc bike. That's my goal now.

So, I've been thinking on how to make a simple timer set up for some drag practice on some quiet country roads to check on my progress of modifications. Just something with a start beam and a stop beam 200me away and a way of displaying the numbers until I can turn around and get back to the start to check them. Been looking at bicycle, horse and runners timers but none are quite suitable (a lot do lap times) and most around several thousand dollars. I don't want to spend too much, but want it to be reliable. Anybody have any ideas?

I don't think there are any systems out there for under $1,000. Even building something from home will involve a lot of cable, a number of optic sensors and a method of logging data. It will be great to see how you go with this challenge.

Gosh, you guys are funny. :D
There are so many ways to achive this, but they all cost big $$$.
I had a thought about using the cotton and a paperclip idea, but would still need to get timers.
