Lol, so this bike is the one that will teach me the Art of Motorcycle Repair, hey? Was just out for a quick ride before family stuff for the rest of the weekend and everything was going well. Cruising smoothly on about 75k's she suddenly started dropping power and coughing. No choke on, no obvious reason. I started pulling over but it suddenly all smoothed out and I was away. I pulled over anyway but, by then it was idling fine and smooth. Started heading back home, just in case, and it started running rough, on and off. I don't have much experience with bikes (d'uh) but it felt like one cylinder was dropping out and then coming back in spurts. My first thought is electrical, maybe a loose connection on a coil? Managed to limp home with the bike sounding a lot like a single, but with spurts of smooth running, which seemed to amuse everyone I rode past I'm checking the coil wiring first but I thought I'd see if anyone had other suggestions. Thanks
bad earth, loose coil, dirty fuel, blocked carbs, loose electrical connection, CDi on its way out....just a few potentials. but suggest you start with the easy tasks like checking all the earths and connection and work from there.
Thanks @Moo. Drained the tank and replaced it with new fuel and checked the filter and the workings of the tap when I had the carbies off to clean the blockages from the jets two weeks ago. Replaced one of the fuel lines at the same time. Had the coils off then as well, but last weekend pulled the coils for testing and sanded all the connectors and made sure they were tight and clean tat the time. CDi is an interesting idea; could that take out just one cylinder, though? Just checked the three week old plugs and they are much sootier than I would have expected after this short a time. I wonder if that is why the original plugs were hotter than the ones the manual calls for? (Should be 8's but was running 9's and those 9's had a perfect look to them when I replaced them.)
Hotter plugs are less likely to foul. I am lead to believe some people run them when the engine is getting smokey.
