    Hi - I'm Garry, resident in the UK and new to this forum and FZR250 ownership. Have searched the forum for info but came up short - so can someone tell me how to identify what engines I have? I'm guessing different models have different engine codes too for non-exup / exup models? I have 4 engines, but no bikes, so cant tell you how many headlamps it has etc.
    All help much appreciated.

    Garry.

    Hi, Garry. Unfortunately the FZR250 series didn't mark the serial number on the engine cases, just the headstock. If you have an internal oil filter, it could be an old 2KR, either EXUP or non-EXUP, or a 3LN1. An external filter could be the 3LN3 or -5, but you can't really tell the difference between them and the slightly de-tuned -6 and -7 without examining the cams.

    Not that it REALLY makes that much difference; the 3LN3 made 45PS, while the 6 and 7 were limited to 40 with a lower redline and advance curve in the ignitor box.

    thanks for the prompt reply!
    all 4 engines have / had external oil filters - so how do I identify them from the cams - are they code stamped?

    ps - Scarborough is in North Yorkshire, England - yours is fake <!-- s:D --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_biggrin.gif" alt=":D" title="Very Happy" /><!-- s:D -->

    My 89 model 3LN1 has an engine number cast onto the top of the gearbox - its directly in front of the swingarm pivot. You need to look directly under the carbies to see it ? But it definitely cast into the upper crankcase, in a specific spot.

    What you are talking about is the crankcase tolerance marking ... it's not a an engine serial number. At least on mine 3LN.

    engine number starts with 1HX -

    I checked this with the local Yamaha dealer. Its definitely a serial number for the motor. My 250 is actually a 2KR not a 3LN1 as I originally thought - but the serial number is in exactly the same place as the 3LN1 motors, as pictured above.

    The serial numbers for the frame and engine match on mine ... just the prefixes are different.
