Hi all, check out this cool old 1985 FZ250 Phazer that I recently picked up.

Guy bought it in for a front tyre and rego check, which it failed due to leaking fork seals and binding front brakes. When I told him how much it was gonna cost to make it roadworthy, after a few sighs and head shakes he offered it to me for $500 (with the new tyre)! I couldn't say no, so here I go with another 250 project bike...

Overall the bike is a bit rusty but in very original condition. Apart from a bent brake lever you would think it has never been dropped. All the plastics are in great condition apart from the front guard which has a big crack. I think it's going to be very hard to find another one as these bikes would have to be one of the rarest `80s / 90's 4cyl bikes around it seems. I'm not sure how far I'll go with it cosmetically yet so I started with the basics.

After an oil and coolant change, I strapped it to the dyno at work and gave it a bit of a workout. It idled okay but ran terribly and the clutch slipped like buggery, but didn't blow up so I've moved onto Phaze 2... Have removed & stripped the carbs, ordered a Litetek seal kit, new OEM inlet manifolds, airbox rubbers & clamps, rocker cover gasket and air filter. The bike came with an original Japanese parts book and I work at a Yamaha dealership so cross referencing parts to FZR stuff has made things pretty easy so far. The fuel tank it pretty rusty but not leaking, it will get a liner kit put through. I did an engine leakdown test which was excellent with basically no leakage so I will check the valve clearances, replace the clutch and hopefully that's all the engine work it will need.

Will report back in the coming weeks once I have it up and running again, hopefully with video of a decent result on the dyno...

Look's to be in pretty good condition
I only just noticed that the FZ's had twin disc front,, i wonder why they went to a single disc on the 2KR's ?
The intake manifold's are dear enough @$60ea, hope you get discount, i guess they're still half the price of Zeal intake's

Aaaaand 3 years later.... It's finished! Lots of cleaning, rust and corrosion removal. Repainted the frame with a perfect colour matched 2K silver. Repainted engine, forks, top yoke plus lots of parts in 2K satin and gloss black. Striped and rebuilt brake calipers. Tank was very rusty and after a lot of effort removing it put a liner kit through. Replaced intake boots, clamps, air filter, hoses, seals, O rings etc, lots of small OEM parts (all still available). Leakdown tested engine (very good <7% leakage), adjusted valve clearances, new plugs, rebuilt carbs with Litetek seal kit, balanced and set up on dyno. New tyres of course! On historic rego and been on a few rides, it goes great, really fun to to ride. Bit of a flat spot at 7K but pulls all the way to 16K really smoothly. Apart from the hand grips (NLA) it's in 100% original condition, very pleased with how it's all come together. Only downsides are the soft suspension and weak front brakes, but have ordered some better pads and in the process of adapting a CBR900RR shock that I think will fit.
