    @GreyImport :minigun:

Haha thanks a lot everyone! Can't believe how helpful everyone is! I've ordered the plug from jaycar so will have it by the weekend. Update to come then :dance2:
I did notice with the seat, fairings and fuel tank cover off the frame is looking 31 years old - same age as me but I can't get a respray. There's a lot of missing bolts too which is painful being a perfectionist. So definitely in the future once I've sorted everything mechanically I'd like to do a ground up restore.

I'm more inclined to trust the one you've unplugged and taken a shot off, it matches the wiring loom thread too.

    Fixed the previous picture now
I dont have a 4 terminal plug to check it against, just found that pic on a Zeal page a while ago (may be wired different?)

All that green crap is a problem. Get in there with a handheld wire brush and some soapy water. Once clean and shiny, use some dielectric grease on the connector & pins, then refit. Also clean the earth.

Beat me to it, I couldn't agree more

To clean them you can make a weak solution with 2 teaspoon of citric acid & a drop of dish soap in a glass of hot water, use a tooth brush to brush it in, shouldn't take long at all, then rinse with a weak solution of hot water and bicarb soda then water fresh rinse

Awesome thanks guys, I've managed to get an original plug off a 2KR harness and it matches up with the wiring you're showing above. Will pick it up and try it tomorrow after work :)

Evening guys, so I've wired up and tried the OEM reg/rec.
As you can see I sanded the frame where they meet and the back side of the reg/rec to try give it the best contact. I will get myself some dielectric grease and do it again soon.
You can see in the photo the bolts that were holding the old reg/rec aren't suitable for this one but it's all I had on hand to test it. That block connector won't be staying there either it was from the previous owner.

    IMG_4595.JPG
    IMG_4597.JPG
    So I tested it and...
    IMG_4599.JPG
Spot on :) Highest it reads is 14.xxx volts so I believe that's just right! Better than the 17.xxx volts it was charging at.

I then took her for a 10 minute ride putting her through her paces and...
    IMG_4605.JPG
    IMG_4606.JPG
Same story :( during the ride it didn't get higher than just over half way on the gauge(with the lights on) but once stationary it rose within a minute or two even with the fan on.
I did notice that with the lights on just the first position(park lights I assume) the gauge didn't rise but with full on it jumps.

What should I be taking from all this?

In my mind I assume the colder weather has been enough to keep the temp down and once stationary, it rises. As for the lights affecting the gauge it's still a mystery. Also is it rising to the point of overheating or is it just rising to normal operating temps:headbang:Lights off - the max it gets to is in the above photo with the lights off, and same goes for lights on where its just touching the red(danger zone) and I switch her off at that point.

Would it be fair to assume the cooling system does need a good once over?
I should have my infrared thermometer tomorrow.

Here's a couple videos showing the charging and the temp after the ride.

After watching the video closely I can see the gauge does rise from lights off to the first position and more so on the full position.

OK, so issue #1 regulator rectifier solved, did you get the separate ground strap for the thermostat housing sorted, I know there was a shot with the thermostat housing on a bracket to the frame - there's something electrical going on, wondering if you can measure to see if there's a voltage difference between the thermostat housing and the frame with the engine running -> light off, then lights on

So have you double checked your coolant level at the filler neck ?
My FZR need's to be started and run for 5 or more minute's to check the water level.
Even then it still need's to be burped by squeezing the top hose a few time's to push any air out the filler,
It also need's to be moved from vertical to the left and to the right a few time's, then left standing straight up on a track stand before i can check the coolant level

Is your coolant nice and clean ?
On the 2KR's the coolant run's through part of the frame on the left side of the engine, there may be rust or rust scale in you radiator core's blocking or partly blocking the flow?

I don't know if we've mentioned in your threads that there are two coolant bleed screws on the cylinders to prevent the vapour lock and overheating, I know it's been mentioned to someone recently, I just cannot find the post with the image from @GreyImport

Time to flush that coolant system also and check the water pump if you haven't already

Thinking about it, you've got a decent meter, you'll need to pop the front nose fairing off to access the back of the instrument cluster, but can you measure the current going through the temperature gauge first with the lights off, then with the lights on, then measure the voltage drop, i.e. voltage at the gauge again with the lights off and then with the lights on
Not saying this with absolute certainty, but I don't think it's a faulty gauge as you've also pondered, it's just that something else electrical is influencing it, related to the lights

I haven't done the ground strap yet as I thought the bracket would be the ground but thinking about it now sounds like a good idea. I'll have a closer look tomorrow morning. Haven't noticed any stray wires yet.
