The common visable thing to see if you have the full 45hp or the restricted 40hp model is the dimples in the clutch case, but...,
As I am translating the workshop manual I found another distinct difference.

The full 45hp model has the dimples in the clutch case and the park switch in the ignition barrel, but the later models only have an on/off ignition.
As the clutch cover is pretty much a universal fit amongst the the suzuki four 250 models of that era (including the gsx250f across), the trick to look for is in the ignition wiring.

The full hp models have a four pin plug to the ignition and all the other GJ74A models have a two pin green plug.

Here is the bad news: If you are looking to replace the key (petrol cap, seat release and ignition barrel), so far I can only find brand new replacements for the four pin model. The two pin variant is only available second hand and mostly from Japan.

Also there is a rear shock difference between the two variants too, more news on this as I translate further.

P.S. never use the handle bar differences as a guide to which model you have, it's all over the place.
Frame number and now ignition plug is turning out to be a more trusted way to be accurate.
Also as these babies were all grey imports there may be a chance that the motor might not tally with the frame number.

Ahh the joys of project bikes.
