    After 2 hours of carb tuning last night the hotter it got the worse it ran ..... from not idling at all to not even starting

    A total waste of time , effort and money

    Did you check the exhaust headers for heat... sounds like the valve clearances.

    I also suggest checking the valve clearance first. They need to be done anyway.

    what about sticking your carbs ( off bluey) on this bike to rule out a carb issue ?

    Pinky & The Brain got a bit of love today... valve cover off and guess what? Almost all of the valves were at or below the minimum clearance spec. Surprisingly the chain was fine.

    Shims changed out after raiding a spare cylinder head for more shims... seem to be running out of 160's and 155's and those in between/around that. Have loads and loads and loads of 180's 175's 170's and so on. Might have to get some refills or do some shim swapping.

    Cranked it with no choke till the oil light went out, then put full choke and started her up... a bit clacky after not being started for a year and with stale old 91 fuel, but she ran. Now with fizzers, you absolutely cannot let them die after a cold start, because you'll never get it going again... After a few more start attempts and 2 massive afterfires from the exhaust, one with a 3 foot flame, some fresh fuel & a recharged battery and tomorrow we will hopefully take it for a spin... weather permitting. Forecast rain... :aggressive:

    No it has its own complete set of carbs.

    OK I just mis-connected the dots with greys other recent posting of cleaning some needle jets and jet needles in preparation for installation

    This one seems to have been quite problematic with it's carbs

    Leaky float needles which were replaced, busted jet housing cap bolt which was also replaced... the needles and tubes looked fine and it ran well before... it's had the same fuel in the tank for nearly a year so its gone a bit off. Fuel tap has started to leak... hoses need doing.

    Never had an FZR afterfire out the exhaust before though... sounded like a gunshot. My Ninja 250R used to do it on occasion on a cold start and scare the crap out of people. But I think it's because the coils fire at TDC of the exhaust stroke as well as compression (also known as wasted spark).

    Some new fuel plus a fresh battery and she should be right :D

    New fuel and charged battery ..... no backfire but wont run except intermittently and only revs up roughly if u shake the bike or lean it over heaps .... then just dies every time.

    Because it has sat for 12 months carbys are probably gummed up or maybe it needs a new filter which I dont think we have ever changed :aggressive:

    Yea I dont think the fuel is getting thru cleanly

    I had a post somewhere on here which showed a visible fuel level check which I actually left in place when riding day in day out.
    It used 1mm syringes forced into clear tube and taped to the carb bowls nice, easy, visual check in the case of any misbehaviour.

    It did help me one evening when things got weird, it was easily diagnosed as a blocked fuel filter.

    All I needed to do was loosen/tighten the float bowl drain screws, which I got so well versed at doing I could do in the dark just by feel, then shine the torch in...

    It is sealant. Just like the previous person gouged out the fuel tap, this piece has also been gouged out and covered in red goop. Carbs will need another pull down to get any bits of rust from the tank and silicon crap out.
