    Hi guys

I'm working on a GSX 250 1981 project bike. I'm so close to getting the engine running but have hit one final hurdle and so seeking some advice.

Basically, the compression is good, the spark is perfect and the engine fires up nicely with a bit of easy start sprayed into the carbs but then shortly dies after. I've rebuilt the carbs with a kit, pilot jet set as per the manual, fuel is getting into the bowls no problem and then the float is set to the correct height. I'm running with pods at the moment as the bike didn't have an air filter when I bought it. Tried with the choke fully out and still nothing.

I know the engine isn't getting the fuel but with fuel in the carbs, no blockage and everything set correctly, I'm stuck for ideas; any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers, Dan

Have you checked the valve clearances yet?

I know you said that you have perfect spark, but are you running brand new plugs? These little motors need perfect plugs.

Also was the carb kit genuine? I have found that carb kits can mix and match bits and are not always stock dimensions. You generally have to run all the carb kit bits as a set and can not mix old and new.

Ditch the Pods and find yourself the correct air intake... you will never get it to run right on Pods...

To get pods to work correctly, does require a lot of time and effort to get the carbs jetted/adjusted correctly. Best if you have access to lots of dyno time. Most people just give up and go for the standard setup. That said, the pods should not be stopping the bike from running. Have you tried without the pods installed?

Yeah, those are all good, double-checked them today.

Yeah brand new plugs and the carb kit was from eBay labelled as 'high quality' if that's anything to go by :idk:

I tried running with and without pods but doesn't make a difference. I'm toying with getting some Mikuni VM26's to swap out for, as like you all said above, it just won't run well without standard setup. I want to at least get the engine turning over, even if it's roughly, before making that kind of investment.
