Hey Fuzzball That was my reaction as well, precious little survived. Well, we have sourced another engine that shall be collected soon. The intent is to rebuild and keep blown engine for spares. The only part that survived intact was the gudgeon pin.
if you look close you caan make out the circlip from the piston just sat on the web of the crank you did a good job on that engine phil aSs you say not much has sirvived in tact after the hand granade went off inside it :o
Obtained an engine this week, have no idea of it's status at this stage. Today finished stripping the old engine and salvaged all usable parts. If nothing else I now have a reasonable supply of parts that weren't affected by the explosion. Hope to get time very soon to commence rebuilding and get this bike on the road. Phil
thats great news phil  from a very wet coolly rocks custom show down here on the gold coast
Just an update on the X7 engine. Had the chance to watch the engine being stripped down. Jason, my mechanic at Redline was well pleased with the engine, lateral movement on the crank=good Conrods measured and well within range. Pistons in good condition, rings to be replaced. So far, so good. Today he was going to split the casing and check everything else. I'm hoping that the bottom end and the rest are as good. Will keep you posted!
As Phil said, the prognosis so far is that X7 engine he sourced is that its in pretty good nick, its been agreed that we will still spilt the cases and replace the crank bearings and fit some new rings(everythign esle seems okay) . A new Gasket kit, rings and pistons have been ordered so its starting to happen. While its all apart, we should get the cases stripped and cleaned then get it back togther. The one good thing about X7's and Gt250's in general is that parts are relatively cheap. Chris
So a bit of an update on the GT250 X7, the gaskets and pistons arrived so its almost time to start the rebuild, when we measured the barrels they were well with tolerances for standard pistons, however there was a bit more wear down below, so a new set of .50 pistons are now on order, if anyone needs a set a standard x7 pistons and rings, please PM me as I have a spare set. I hate waiting for stuff to arrive :BangHead: thanks Chris
Sorry, I have been a little negligent in keeping up to date and posting progress on the X7. Time seems to stand still whilst waiting on parts. As posted previously the first piston arrived and we discovered that we hadn't measured the full depth of the bore and hence needed oversize pistons. Happy to say that they have finally arrived (THE PISTONS ) and this coming week should see some progress. Will keep you posted Phil
Just an update on the X7 engine rebuild. Whilst up the coast this past week I was able see the engine back together. She has been re bored with new pistons and some parts from my old engine. Hope to collect the engine early next week and fit her up within the frame. Will need to prime the oil pump and make certain oil is feeding the engine. Fingers crossed, she will rise again. Can't wait to hear it fire up. Happy days. Phil
Collected the X7 engine yesterday, have a little work to do and then back in the frame she goes. Must confess am looking forward to hearing that engine fire up, been awhile coming. Won't be long now. Phil
Question for all you bike fans. Whilst re:assembling the engine I have discovered that the bolts that hold the header exhaust pipes on are damaged. My guess is that I will need to tap these out to a larger size bolt. Having not done this before, ANY TIPS. :icon_scratch: Look forward to hearing back, Cheers Phil
What do u mean by damage? ...bent? damaged thread? They would be studs....screwed into the head I would be attempting to take them out with as little force as possible......WD40 soaking, heat applied ...that kinda thing for starters. You dont want to damage the head...tread warily  Didnt u just have the engine worked on?.....probably should have been done while the head was off.
Hey Phil, A word from the wise, make sure you mark how far into the head the original studs went, it's very easy when rethreading these to go in to far and damage an oil gallery etc, Not to sure how much it applies to bikes but when working on cars you should always get the original manufacturers studs. If you use aftermarket studs that are a different metal they can expand faster than the head and cause issues again.
