Well, I was perusing Gumtree and spotted a 1998 ZZR600 for $550, I thought at bets its a parts bike so I made a offer of $400, he countered with $450 so I said yep on my way. 30 mins later I arrive at his place, walk in and my jaw dropped, here is a ZZR600 that's absolutely immaculate, the story goes that it is his wife's bike and she doesn't ride anymore, it sat in the garage under cover for 3 years and he pulled it out recently , changed the oil, fresh fuel and he could only get it running on 2 cylinders.

So sometime this week, I pull the carbs down and see what's happening in there, cant help but feel like the bike gods were looking out for me today.:thumb_ups:

Had a look under the seat, found these books. Basically the carbs need a clean out, fluids replaced (oil, brake) and a new front tyre and I can get her on the road.

Oh wow, lucky lucky!!! They are a nice bike to ride, very good engine. I rode one a few times back in about 1999 and was impressed with the power compared to my ZXR 750, it felt just as fast up to about 150 and heaps smoother. If its a goodun you will enjoy :dance2:

I couldn't wait to get home, I pulled the carbs off and had a look at the mains, pilots, emulsion tubes and the filters, she was very green on all the brass bits, I gave them a quick soak in carb cleaner blewit all out with the compressor. I refitted the carbs and airbox, hooked up the tank and hit the starter, she took a bit of coxing but fired up and ran on all 4... wining. All the tiny holes in the emulsion tubes were blocked and I had nothing that could get them all, it will need another strip down and a good soak in 3bond .

I now I know the engine is good, no rattles , it sounds pretty good.

The exterior of the carbs looks really good, internals different story. Good soaking and she'll be good as new.

While she Is now running on 4, its not running great and everyone and a while she coughs and splutters so I decided to give her the royal 3bond treatment. Carbs came off the needles were shocking, the main jets, slow jets, air mix screws and emulsion tubes went into a jar of 3bond for a few hours, when I came back the fluid was turning green, so I dumped the 3bond and repeated the process. As you can see she is cleaning up nicely.

The throttle bodies have been cleaned and tomorrow I will reassemble them, then pull out the Carbtune and balance them.
I ordered some new rubber today as well. A few more jobs this weekend and hopefully she will be ready for rego, although Im sure I will something else that needs doing.
