    Well, today was a "2 steps forward, 1 step back" kind of day. We pulled the bottom off the engine to check oil pickup, PLV and other bits down there. A bit of muck in there, but not too bad. Checked the valve clearances next & mostly okay, but a few were bad. One I couldn't put anything under was a worry. So, after several attempts to get that "bad" valve clearance right, we decided to check the clearance with just the bucket and after that we managed to get a shim in there that was within tolerances. It's about a 140 while all of its buddies are in the 165-170 range, so me thinks something not quite right there. Cam chain isn't as tight as it could be, but seems fine while hand turning the engine. I will post some pics tomorrow. Speaking of tomorrow, compression test will be the first order of business and that will determine what happens next.

    A couple of my valve shim's were around 136,
    i spoke with a mechanic at Race Bike Service's where i bought shim's from and he said the valve seat's must be worn or the valve head's were worn.
    He recommended that i pull the head off next time to check them out

    Thanks @my67xr. That's exactly what I said to the chief. Unfortunately, we don't have a head gasket if I pull the head off and we definitely don't have tools/skills to remove valve, redo seat and grind it etc.

    We'll see if the engine has compression and go from there.

    A lot of modern dirt bikes have titanium valves. They are coated in a hardener that can deteriorate (usually from dust getting past a poorly maintained air filter) so you have to buy new valves and recut the seats - definitely no lapping valves. The valves and seats are actually slightly different angles, too - like 44° and 45°. We have equipment to cut seats (in certain sizes) and a valve refacer, for steel valves. We've done a few drz400 heads that spend some time in the desert. ZXR 250 would be very tricky!

    ZXR wont be any different to most 4 cylinder car or bike heads in terms of grinding valves and seats... quite possibly they have hardened valve seats that can be changed if they have been taken too deep previously.. the big issue is the seats get ground.. or maybe only one because of a burnt valve and then they reface the valve so you end up with the valve stem higher than the others and a very small shim... lots of engine places actually grind the tops of valve to get a more accurate measurement using a similar sized shim right across the head... they will almost always go close to the largest gap with the largest shim they can so there is plenty of room for further adjustment as the gap decreases as the valves and seats wear into each other.

    From my experience it wasn't the seats that were worn at all . But the valves had large grooves worn in them . And only on one side .

    Taking a bit off the valve stem end would work I guess, but we have a shim in there at the moment that meets specs, so we'll see how she goes (or not).
