Guys, Please advise if this not the right forum. I've been using CB250F1 and had a terrible experience today evening. After riding about 6-7 Kms bike suddenly stopped and wasn't starting. After few attempts it did and traveled another few then had same issue. Realizing that the fan is not working, left the bike for some time to cool. After an hour it started with no problem. Guessing the problem is with the sensor that starts fan, I directly connected bypassing the sensor and the fan worked. Then when I started the bike again none of the lights except the head work, even the horn has gone off. Should this be a problem with the fuse? how can I replace it. Please share your experiences. Thanks in advance. Mufleeh
Find the fuse box (usually near the battery) and check for any blown fuses. Before you replace any fuses you need to find out why they blew. Excessive heat causes high resistance which causes everything to heat up more. Wiring can get cooked, the insulation can melt off and short out, thus you get a blown fuse.
Sounds like your battery is on its way out mate. I'd be testing it then replacing it if required. The reason being is the battery typically supplies the current to run all the bike electrics. If it is not able to sustain enough current (due to age, dropping a cell etc) the bike will start to play up. Note it also supplies spark to the plugs so that may be why you've cut out. The fan is another thing that it would supply, through your thermostat switch (note if your bike isn't up to temperature the fan may not turn on). If you had overheated the bike believe me you'll hear some very bad things happen before you lose compression and shag your engine... Considering yours still starts I doubt it would be something major like that. Let us know how you go. my 2c on the fuse is when one is blown things either work or they don't. Maybe the fan fuse is blown, but that wouldn't cause your bike to cut out unless you experienced the above. Either way it certainly wouldn't affect your headlight, horn etc. The battery will.
Useful tips mates thank you. Few things happened last couple of days. Knowing that fan didn't work I replaced the thermostat switch (it was 100 but what I got was 85 - hope that's ok). Even after replacement it didn't work and we found the coolant was empty. After having it filled fan starts working quicker than before as its 85. I also found the 2nd fuse connected to horn, signal and break lights has blown. Tried replacing it with a couple but they blew too as I just start the bike. I agree I should have checked before replacing them but have no clue whats wrong. As you said I assume that over heat must have caused some wires melt and get short. Also recently I changed the bulbs inside the meter box too. Will be taking to garage tomorrow morning, I'll make an update here.
If they blow when you hit the starter and not when the ignition is on, check all the wiring for the starter motor circuit
True but all (signals and break lights etc.) turns on soon as I turn the key start so it could be in any wire connected to those, isn't it?
I'm not sure "overheating" the engine will necessarily cause wires to "melt". Typically wires get hotter with higher current running through them, which potentially isn't related to engine temperature. If your wires aren't shielded correctly or they are damaged you could be getting a short somewhere, with that new information it sounds plausible. That won't be easy to find but it looks like you've found the right circuit (if the fuse keeps blowing). You'll have to trace the wires until you find it.
Agree! So I am leaving it to the garage man today morning. Yes the wires are not clean as I see, most of them are taped. Not sure if they're originally done or by the one who assembled it here. Anyway let's see what he can do. I'll make an update here. Thanks.
