hey guys, hope alls well with everyone. I have a ?'90 model 3ln3 bought and got sucked in, we all live and learn, anyway bought not running got running and found out it had a terrible knock. Now I could try and buy a good running motor preferably from someone on here or have itpulled down and again see if there was any local knowledgeable guys who'd be willing to help with advise, I would really like to pull it down and rebuild it as I want to race it in category 6 I think it is in post classic. I've put an 89 engine in and got it running, although not very well, but a bit of tinkering and lots of hours will fix that. But I know the engine has a lot of abuse as it was a previous race engine apparently so I can't see it lasting long. I believe the 400 manuals are in English so between those and any help from fellow members, a top end rebuild wouldn't be out of the question, at least I'd know I'm starting with a solid base. But if there's anyone out there who has a '90 model and knows it's in good condition engine wise and aren't wanting stupid money for it that'd be another excellent option, the more parts the better I reckon. Anyway I'd love to hear people's thoughts and possible prices for rebuilds etc done by myself so just part costs please ad ya 2 bobs worth. Everyone's ideas and help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Mick

Recently rebuilt a 2KR engine and was not difficult, fairly straight forward design. If you have a knock I would be doing a full strip down to check on the crank bearings.
To give you an idea of costs; pistons kits x4 -$190 (Chinese made ones) plus cost of reboring about $200, gasket set $35, timing chain (from Italy) $44, etc. You may find better prices or wish to go with Wiseco or Prox pistons (I drag race my CBR with the Chinese pistons without worry) but be prepared to pay for them (maybe about $1000).
Do the work your self so you can learn what goes on inside an engine and pay someone who knows what their doing for those jobs you cannot do, eg reboring. Good luck getting your hands dirty.

The engine knock isn't a badly worn clutch basket ?

The crankshafts/rods/pistons are the same across all 3LN's. When my 3LN6 did a rod bearing, I pulled it apart and replaced the crank and rods as a set from a spare 3LN1 motor. I replaced the main journal bearings with chinese ones, but left the rod bearings alone as they were not sloppy.

New chinese pistons, wrist pins, and rings and it ran like a brand new bike

As you said with the FZR400 manual in english it is possible - you have the crankcase bolt pattern and torque figures from the 250 manuals and the words in english from the 400.

I used a piece of cardboard and a marker, pulled out the bolts one by one and stuck them in the cardboard and then numbered them. When taking cases apart, undo the highest number bolts first, assembly is the opposite. Torque specs are important, do not overtighten. Make sure that you properly clean the case mating surfaces and seal them lightly with the proper sealant, eg Threebond 1215

Thanks Murdo, I think that's the road I'll take as I wanna do another one for work and getaway time, I have one almost complete bike and one bare frame that I have a early ninja upside down front end and an r6 shock, probably buy another r6 shock for the period 6 bike as well if I'm allowed to run it. Cheers mate appreciate your reply

Not sure mate pulled it out of frame as I might as well do a top end rebuild, but I'll definitely be having a look at that clutch basket thru the week, thanks a lot for the idea bro, but it was a pretty bad knock ,like maybe a valve, but ya never know. I'll update ya when I have a look. Cheers

I got parts coming out of my ears mate including a good bottom end, spare head, bore whole bunch of other stuff. The engines are heaps easy once you know what you're doing... I can look to send you some stuff if you're still interested. I'm looking to clear out the shed now to move on to a 4WD project. Done 3 Fizzers and I'm fizzed out!

Mate, that sounds awesome. Any idea what you'd want for all your left over parts, everything and anything you have would help in both my builds ?

I think the best thing is for me to catalogue what I've got left and send you a list and you can tell me what you want. Things like the frame and subframe/triple etc won't be cheap to send. I have sold off random bits and pieces too.

Again, thanks mate, and I look forward to hearing from you. Mick
