Hi Guys, sorry but haven't been around for a while. I am after the think tanks advice.
Recently got pulled over by a motorbike policeman here in QLD for the old, "Rego and licence check"
Hadn't been speeding or doing anything that was worthy of being pulled over.
Standing there in silence while blue boy did the obligatory checks of my licence and rego I kept trying to work out what the issue could be? The more I pondered the more I knew I'd done nothing wrong so confidently started to think I'd be on my way soon enough. Next thing boy in blue is reaching into his panniers and striding over to measure up something. He goes after my aftermarket mirrors. "Undersize....need to be 78mm deep and at least 1200mm long for the reflective surface"
Thinking/panicking on the spot I said, "...even though they're convex mirrors they're not ok?"

He said, "Would you like your infringement notice hard copy or to an email address?"

"We've been having lots of issues with these types of mirrors recently" (...tell someone who cares I thought)

He then looked at my Yoshi slip on pipe and said,"... that should really be compliance stamped." (No fine on this one)

I stood around why he batted away on his/my tax payer funded Ipad.

He then packed up and rode off, breaking the landspeed record in the process and not indicating through a corner.

Holding off on paying the fine ($135 and 1 demerit) I visited a regional office of Queensland Transport for research purposes in terms of getting my facts straight before purchasing replacement mirrors. I inquired about the minimum size requirements for the mirrors.
The TMR employee gaffawed and said, "We don't know..."

    ...pause....blank stare.......

I said, "...but you're happy to take my money"

    ..pause..

"Can't anyone here tell me the minimum sizes?"

    ..pause..

I was then given a phone number to ring and during that there was still no clarification apart from the necessity for the aftermarket parts to have a "e" mark on them to prove they comply. Still received no size specifications.

Would any of you guys know the standards/size in Queensland? Do you need an "e" mark on any aftermarket mirrors? Is it e1; e9; e6?

The best I could find in my research was a minimum of 94mm for round mirrors, 78mm x 1200mm,
80cm2 surface area for flat mirrors and 64.5cm2 for convex.

If I go round bar end mirrors would anyone know the minimum diameter? Are bar ends even legal? Square shape dimensions? rectangular dimensions?
My Yoshi pipe is a slip on and has a clear badge of the manufacturer on it. Is that enough?

I am sure blue boy will probably pull me over next time he see's me to check my compliance. I would like the opportunity to be a little smug (for a fleeting moment) and let him measure away!

    Thanks!

Sorry buddy but i have no idea. There getting heavy over your mirror's :headbang:. Factory Original mirror's or at'least aftermarket copies would be the go if you think he's going to come after you. What bike have you got anyway ?.

    Hi 2valve,
Thanks for the reply. I've got a 2015 Kawasaki Z300. It's my commuter bike and great for lane filtering.
I might never see him again however knowing my luck... I'm just assuming but probably now I'm on the system any police who pull me over will be checking my mirrors. I've had one other police pull over before and mirrors were a non issue, didn't mention them and I was on my way. Since COVID I think they have to revenue raise the government coffers a bit more. It was pretty mean.

Motorcycle cop's have been tough on mirror's for a while now.
    I 'm pretty sure they don't need to be E Marked though, car mirror's aren't E Marked

My GPR muffler is E Marked though E3

Motorcycle cops must have nothing meaningful to do.

I thought that was the reason for the tight fitting pants and high boots, to give them a feeling of a sense of purpose so that could strut with pride

And the little leather caps they put on when they take their helmets off... Very Luftwaffe if you ask me...

If anything, I'd be checking the ADR compliance stuff for details on mirror sizing and go from there. I wouldn't be paying until you have at least verified the legitimacy of their claim.

I'd say going by that not one single bike sold in Australia is in compliance with the those poorly written ADR's - circular mirror with a reflective surface 94mm diameter - 70cm squared OR 240cm square if the shape is rectangular

I'd say that anomaly is being abused by the police at their convenience to give people a hard time

Assuming that is the case, I would fight that till the ends of the earth. Then I would start a social media page to get refunds for every bike rider who has been victimised by those psychotic cops. Except I don't live in Aus anymore and the cops here do nothing.

Before everyone gets too upset over the wording in the regs, here is what I found on the regs for QLD.

    Rear vision mirrors
    • Motorcycles built before 1975 must have at least 1 mirror on the right-hand side. Motorcycles built from 1975 onwards must have at least 1 mirror on each side.
    • Mirrors must be fitted so that the rider can clearly see by reflection the road behind the vehicle and any following or overtaking vehicle.
    • Mirrors can be flat or convex. Convex mirrors must have identical curvature on both mirrors, with a minimum radius of curvature of 1200mm.
    • Additional mirrors, such as wide angle or blind spot mirrors, are allowed, and may have a smaller radius of curvature.
    • Motorcycles built from 1991 onwards also have a minimum size requirement of 80cm2 for flat mirrors, and 64.5cm2 for convex mirrors.

So in summary, flat face mirrors need a surface area of 80cm sq and convex mirrors an area of 64.5cm sq. At least post 1991. Which sort of implies that pre 1991 mirrors might be able to be smaller.

Here is the source of this information

Well that sorts it - if you wanted to pick a fight with a copper you could go him for malicious prosecution for citing the regulations incorrectly

Perhaps have a copy with you at all times just in case

Take it to court and hang your costs for having to attend on them. The day's wages, travel, and time spend dealing with their frivolous issuing of nonsense infringement notices.

Magistrates hate people wasting time in court, goes for the police as well.

If you've never been in court for traffic matters, that also helps as they will generally go easy on you, especially for something like this. Not so much for speeding offences though.

An FZR250R mirror is slightly over 80 square cm's, 12cm wide at the top, 9cm wide at the bottom and 8cm tall
