Help My 2001 ZZR250

I don't know the zzr250, so bike agnostic questions.

Did you turn the gas on?

Is the kill switch in the run position?

Was the gas left on?

 

after a week, the fuel bowls should still be full, you could try switching your fuel tap to prime to refill them if they are empty, but I doubt it, but I am hazarding a guess that the plugs might be fowled. When you try and start it, are you using full choke and no throttle ? Do you have an inline fuel filter, perhaps that is blocked ?

If you can, pull a spark plug and see what condition they are in. Lots of cranking with some throttle will blacken a plug quick smart

 

Take out one of the spark plugs, plug it into the cable and hold the side of it against something grounded on the bike, then run the starter and watch the plug, you should be able to see a blue spark as the motor is turning. Try this with both spark plugs and if both are working then its likely a fuel problem if the bike was running before

 

it's called the EX250H in the us. just an old fat ninja 250

i always just hold it, the jolt isn't that bad

but yeah, expect to get shocked if you touch the plug directly while the engine's spinning

if both plugs are sparking and there's no way the wires could have been swapped around at some point, i'd check the fuel filter to see if it's clogged, essentially just make sure there's fuel getting to the carbs and also that there isn't any water or anything in the fuel system

when i had my zzr250 it was often a real pain to cold start, i'd open and close the throttle, then give it the starter with no throttle and no choke, then do it again with more and more choke until it fired up. would usually work on 2/3 choke and no throttle, it didn't like to start with full choke. could've just been something particular to my bike though as it had 90000km on it

 

battery might be too weak or valve clearances might be too loose or tight when cold, can you try a push start?

 

My bet is a compression issue due to valve clearances. it having sat stone cold for a week and the airbox not fully sealed will have exacerbated this. What got done in the rebuild?

 

also with getting rubber things to fit when they don't want to, sometimes it helps to heat the rubber by submerging the rubber bits in very hot water (make sure to dry it off well before putting it on the carbs though) warming up the rubber can make it stretch and deform more easily, this is more of a last resort though if you still can't possibly get the airbox on
