Project My '90 FZR250 3LN3

Today i did some work on the rear wheel
I gave the outer edge's a bit of a polish with Autosol Aluminium Polish and a $3 buffing wheel from supercheap in my electric drill, there were a lot of oxidisation mark's where the factory clear coat had been chipped so it didn't come up as good as i want.
I'll have to repolish them after rubbing it back to get rid of the mark's, then i will give them a final coat of Hammer Tough clear to stop the alloy from oxidising and help to stop the paint from chipping.
Masked up the centre's and painted them Dulux metallic blue, let them sit for a while and then gave it 3 coat's of 2 Pak rattle can clear over the next 45 min's
I have enough of both paint's to redo the front wheel when i get a chance
The rattlecan paint finish is not bad for $24 worth of paint

I plan to change the gunmetal grey on the tank and fairing's to the same blue i used on the wheel's at some stage
And i have some blue fairing bolt's on their way too.

Most Auto paint place's sell it, you can a few different type's
You can get one that is a shake and spray for about $13 which is the one i used on the wheel.




The other type is a true 2K, it has a button on the bottom you press in to add the hardener, you need to use the whole can once it's been mixed otherwise it'll turn to jelly, they cost around $42.
The second version is perfect for clear coating motorcycle tank's etc after the base coat's have dried.
It is also the tougher finish of the 2.




Also PPC sell a very tuff gloss polyurethane clear coat in an aerosol, it's made by Eastwood and is called Diamond Coat Gloss Clear ( can get it in satin too) $27

Or if you have a compressor and spray gun etc, use the Glisten Urethane 2K clear
This stuff can be sprayed directly over polished alloy, brass etc and provide's a hammer tough, chip, scratch and scuff resistant finish

Eastwood have some great product's (no i don't work for them, or sell their product's, lol)
Check out their internal exhaust paint for keeping the heat inside the pipe's and lot's of other paint's

I grit blasted the rear sprocket hub and sprocket this morning,
etch primed them and painted the sprocket a coarse metallic silver then cleared it, and painted the hub Dulux metallic blue same as the rim and cleared it too.
Now i just need to wait for them to cure and put it all back together.

 

The blue paint is the Dulux Duramax metallic from Bunning's $11.45 a can from memory, they keep quite a few metallic's in stock
I reckon they also sell the Duramax 2K clear in a 125ml can as well, think it's about $24 though


I put the back wheel together this morning once the paint was dry, and got it back on the bike.
I still need to adjust the chain hence the loose axle lock nut
Second pic down you can see some oxidisation mark's on the the top section of the polished rim, that's the bit's i need to rub back again to get rid of and repolish it





Thought i'd see what the diagonal stripe's on the fairing's will look like too, so pulled the gunmetal sticker's off and the reflective stripe, scuffed the paint, masked it and blew some paint on
I'll get some better pic's of it out in the sun tomorrow

 

I painted the tank stripe's blue today
I wasn't going to spend hour's masking up the Yamaha letter's individually so i just masked in a border around the letter's.
Think it look's alright, and is not too much out of place.
The whole tank will be painted with the rock hard PPC clear coat once i fix the 2 little dent's in the black section's, and rub back and respray the fine scratch's at the rear of the tank

Here it has 3 coat's of blue as the base coat



And has been cleared in these pic's



I've still got the cap to respray too, i paint stripped it and have to pull it apart to polish the outer ring as well
Cant believe how many part's these cap's have in them

Sorry there's no sun to show the new colour in it's glory, we have a week of wet weather coming from tonight on

The reflective gunmetal/gold stripe's will be replaced with some that match more later

 

I have polished up the alloy ring around the fuel cap, that wasn't an easy job getting all the stain's and oxidisation mark's off.
I'm reasonably happy with it now
Etch primed and painted it this morning, weather was a bit cold so i had problem's with the paint blushing and going a whiteish/opaque tinge around the edge's.
Solved it by giving it another couple of coat's and bringing it inside to dry
Waiting for it to dry a bit more atm then i can clear coat it to seal it all

Just grit blasted and etched the spare rocker cover too
