Hi All, Recently bought a dead '90 ZXR 250A. It was cheap ($600)..... Motor was stuffed, low on comp, loads of blowby, holey rocker cover, cracked timing chain tensioner..... Looked good though! Haha! Anyway, it was bought as a project. I found a guy in Perth parting out another 250A - one that had no compliance so had never been licensed..... It had only 22k km on the clocks I bought everything bar the frame. I did the motor swap today....She's a goer
Update.... She's back in one piece & running sweet as! I pulled the carbies down and cleaned them out, reset the bottom end screws, repaired 1 diaphragm that had a small tear & re-synced them on the bench (they had been toyed with by the previous owner trying to get the old dead donk running) Seems like my bench sync worked ok https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=10154895336270073 Not shown in the pics above I've added the rear numberplate mount & rear indicators. Still a work in progress but at least now she's a running concern
Have done a bit more work on the old girl.... Carbs rebuilt, LiteTek seals used (including air box seals) Carbs synced Timing chain tensioner stripped, rebuilt (shimmed 1mm) & reinstalled. EBC clutch installed - modified clutch stack, added 1 extra friction disk. (Feels/rides great!!) Rear hugger installed (po had removed it) Rear underfairing modified & fitted Fairings repaired & touched up - low speed drop by old owner had scratched them up) Heading for licensing next week! Ok, looked to be a bit short to me. Most rego's require the guard to extend to the rear of the sprocket when you have pillion pegs. See page 8, 2.1.11 https://infrastructure.gov.au/roads...or-Cycles_and_3WheelVehicles_01Jan2011_v2.pdf
The centre point of the rear sprocket is only 75mm from the end of the current guard, I'm sure I can make a short extension to achieve this.
Who needs pillion pegs on a ZXR.........take em off they just add weight. Pipe can be hung fron foot peg mount points with a little work
Tonight's fun & games..... Tackling the front forks.... Order of business: Jack her up - strip her down Now that's done drain & strip the forks The reason I had to do this.... Adding more preload with a spacer to stop the forks bottoming out in emergency stops. The spacer is the black Delrin piece. FYI 250a owners: the metal spacer & metal spacer retainer can be separated by drilling out the punch mark that holds the 2 pieces together - now you have a sleeve to drop a second spacer into that will hold everything in place once the fork is back together. The spacer I've added is 20mm thick The assembled preload spacer The two marks on the spacers are now 20mm apart - adding an extra 20mm of preload to the spring - simple solution! I also cleaned up the fork top caps Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I think Murdo could be onto something Yours does look to be a little short. I got a RWC for mine no worries with my stock guard. Yours does not look like it's a stock/origional piece. EDIT: Actually looking at yours a bit closer it does actually look like an original piece that's been hacked. I may even have a spare one if you want it (if I can find it in the pile...) Yeah yeah dirty wheels ect ect
New tyres done! Forks done - the additional preload spacers & 10w oil have firm up the front end nicely I set the oil level at 85mm and it feels good to me. This is the rear fender I made - looks ok haha The extended chain guard (it passed inspection) Fitted a new timing chain tensioner today - this is the old tensioner plunger, the pics don't show just how bad the plunger was chewed up by the bearing lock collar.... it was nasty!
