I bought a CBR400RR NC29 on the cheap On Tuesday night, minor damage on one side, but looks killer , its the CBR400RRN model with the gullarm swing arm. IT was listed on Gumtree for $1000 and I texted the owner, alas no response, then the ad was gone, I thought bugger it, its sold.

I then checked boostcruising.com.au on Tuesday arvo and it was on there saying the ad was last updated 9 hours ago, I called the owner, we agreed on a price and I went and picked it up. I need a rear brake pedal and some new tyres then it should be on the road. I got it home, the battery had charge but it hadn't been ridden in a few years. It wouldn't start so on Wednesday night I stripped and cleaned the carbs using threebond. It still wouldn't start, but was very close.

Phil came down yesterday and I asked him to pick me up a set of plugs, oil filter and some oil, we then set about getting the plugs in. Seriously what a pain in arse, you have to pull some much stuff to get access to the plugs. When I went to change plug 2, my spanner wouldn't grip the plug, so I used my iPhone to take a photo down the plug hole, what I saw was a small rock in there.

I grabbed the vacuum cleaner and put it down the spark plug tunnel and managed to suck the rock out. While I was fitting the plugs, I broke a coolant hose, it was very brittle, so I started removing the broken parts of the hose and somehow broke a T piece for the cooling system. Im sure I can get one from Supercheap or Auto Barn

With the new plugs in, carbs on with no airbox, I said to Phil, lets fire it up. Hit the button and she fired up. The next job was a broken brake pedal when the PO had dropped the bike , I found the part number and they are used on a CBR900 (93-97) as well, I have an old box of pedals from a stash of parts I bought about 6 years ago and you wouldn't read about it, but there was one in the box in perfect condition, so Phil fitted it up. Back brake fixed.

I ordered some new Dunlop GPR300 tyre's for the bike, so next job was to get the wheels off, they are getting fitted today, the brake pads all need replacing as well.

    To do list
    1. Replace broken T piece on cooling system
    2. Replace coolant
    3. Clean and lube the chain
    4. Fix front brake mast cylinder

    A few more pics.

nice to see you got it running - my zxr's engine is now doing the exact same thing that your cbr400's was doing night before last, will have to check out the plugs and try some fresh ones tomorrow

taken it for a spin yet?

Another Kiffsta project that will be soon out the door and onto the next. Don't forget to ride it for some fun value Kiffsta :)
That is jealousy coz my project is like a stick in the mud. I tried to buy an NC23 (the earlier version) for a long time but most of them had Tyga "copy" kits. Now almost every grey bike in Thailand has them. It was so bad that Tyga changed their website for the locals and you cannot access most of their range.

I like this one because it original, last night we did some more work, we stripped the front calipers, cleaned the pistons and reassembled it, we had some dramas with bleeding them so Phil is the hunt for some new bleed screws, Im leaning towards them being blocked and not working 100%.

Wheels are back on, chain has been cleaned and lubed. We degreased the bike last night to get rid of a few years of dust that had accumulated on it. The exhaust has been damaged when it was dropped, I have removed it and a mate on mine is going to have a crack and shortening it and refitted the flange that goes onto the headers as that is where the damage is. No one seems to have a 2nd hand muffler in Oz for sale, except a wrecker in Sydney who wanted $150 for a damaged one.

Im going to balance the carbs today using the Carbtune, then reassemble the airbox etc., all going well, might try sneak in a lap of the block if the brakes bleed up :)

She is all back together, o coolant leaks, my brass T piece is working a treat, the replacement bleed nipples fixed the brake issue issue. Done a few runs up the street, its very loud without an exhaust, sounds fricken hot and pulls nicely to 10,000 rpm !!!

Hopefully my exhaust can be fixed and I can get this one rego'ed

Tim to sell ... Nah, I have been wheeling and dealing for many few years and now have some pretty cool bikes in the garage, so maybe its time to start enjoying riding them. Its funny, I have always bought bikes that have had a hard life and either fixed or stripped them depending on the condition, but its incredibly time consuming to clean , strip, list them for sale, do the run to post office as well as searching for more bikes. I think I did more of them just to help build content on here, but this place is humming now.

I must admit I like saving them more than stripping them :) , there have been some good ones that have found their way back on the road which is cool, so no more purchases in the near future for me, its time to ride !!! I still have a massive cache of parts which I will continue to sell, that will help fund the expense of running this site.

As compared to the MC22, the 400RR has plenty more get up and go, but is heavier and wider. Im grinning ear to ear after my ride to the Transport Department , maybe I have found my keeper ? Ask me next week, who knows, I will probably change my mind and buy 4 or 5 bikes :)
