So I picked up my 3ln1 back in April, seemed to be an ok bike, bit rough but rode well and the only big issue I could find was a leaky fork seal and a rusty inner sanction.

However the biggest issue I've found so far is the fuel system, when I first got into it I found the fuel pump, filter had been bypassed and the tap and mount had been removed. Fuel delivery to the carbs was direct from the rusty gas tank. Sadly I only got to ride her a little after putting things right before I striped her to powder coat the sub-frame and do the forks.

The worst part of all this however is the state of the carbs:

    BSrQ1b5.jpg

Oddly enough she runs fine except for some bogging taking off now and then, which I'm putting down to the fuel pump being dead (I can't hear it prime anymore) and the exup being out of adjustment.

I've ordered the litetek kit along with a new fuel pump (hard to find a good price), fuel filter, air filter, carb boots top and bottom and a kit to remove the rust and seal the tank. but I'm really wondering if it's worth disrupting the carbs until it really starts giving me headaches or not

That needs to be fixed. As mentioned elsewhere, your T-piece in the centre looks to have broken and been poorly repaired. You will need a new one, the part number is 3LN-14251-00.

A seal kit from @maelstrom would be a very good idea, check his website www.litetek.co

Lastly, if you have issues with the bike running very rich and bogging down/flooding, the issue is the needles and emulsion tubes. Because of the design of the carbs, they have a tendency to wear out when the throttle is held at one position (ie cruising) due to vibrations.

Well jis screwdrivers and a sync tool are going to have to be an early christmas present by the sounds of it. The T piece is easy enough, just waiting on megazip to see if they can amend my current order

Almost makes me wish I'd gotten the vtr... almost

My advice is to leave the syncing for now. Do the seal kit with a clean, clear out all the jets etc and try again. I had some down low bogging with my 3LN3, it was easily enough fixed with new seals a clean and a bit of tuning. Ultimate would be new tubes and needles for sure, as has been said - if $ permit as they're bloody expensive.

^^ this is correct, but balance that with the fact most bikes would need it done every approx. 40,000 kms in the service schedule... it's not something you should need to do very often.

Oddly it only just clocked over 40k. By the looks of the rego history it was off the road for nearly 3 years beginning of the decade.

Still it runs well when its going and handles pretty good, now however out of the price range of selling it and making money back.

    Still, she looks good :)

Well probably something to work on, but I'd say better investment of time is in your needles/jets/seals/valve clearances first. I've never bothered with a carby sync on any of my bikes, even a ratty old FZ250 I fixed up. Some people will swear by it but each to their own, this is just my opinion.

Well jet kits have been ordered few hours ago, mid month Its gonna be Christmas (for me at least)

Id be keen to get the sync tool because it would be handy to have for future bikes/projects. Might try the ball bearing trick if I can make a jig up

The air filter can be washed in hot soapy water and put out in the sun to dry ... if its not too far gone

FZR250s are JDMs ... Japanese domestic market only ... anywhere else in the world they are a grey import ... so odometer readings are taken with a grain of salt .... they would most likely be used bikes with new instrument clusters when imported

Bench sync the carbs ... easiest method .. set the butterflys with a fine wire or fine feeler gauge ..... its all Ive ever done with mine and it goes like stink .... and I have a sync tool on the shelf :idk:

This is a budget sync tool i made before buying a decent one
I just had red water in it, but would use some 50 grade engine oil if i were to use it again

Well, tanks finally off, turns out the fuel tap seal was fine after all.

For some reason the fuel pump started working full noise so I'm not sure if it is having intermittent problems or if there are wiring gremlins. Oddly the fuel filter looks quite clean after servicing a rusty tank

Turns out someone thought it was a great idea to suplement wood screws for airbox screws in the past
    xW1Be6a.jpg

Air filters not toooo bad, but could probably be washed
    4t2WFIf.jpg

This right here, this is why idoits should not be allowed near bikes. for some reason they decided they needed to add sealant to the airbox boots, they look like they are in pretty good condition as well (providing they are the correct ones)

Luckily the carbs are still there, from what I can tell they only used it on the float bowls and the T piece, the rest of the carbs look quite clean... ish
