    Hi All,
I have managed to get back into the Forum - just as well I need help!.
I have bought a 1979 X7, which is virtually complete and looks as though it has not really been fiddled with. But I have come up with 2 problems.
When I got the bike and started it, it would not rev up. But after starting it, I put off the ignition and was moving the bike off its centre stand, and heard a noise of air being sucked in past the petrol filler cap. Is it likely the cap can seal that well that air does not get in?. (When I had the filler cap off the bike started and revved up OK).
Secondly I had the bike running but there is a lot of oil coming out the Right Hand exhaust, and a couple of times the engine revved really high (over 7000 rpm) without the throttle being opened more than a touch. Not sure if the problems might be linked?. If the outer oil seal on the right hand side of the crankshaft cover (but inside the gearbox cover) was gone could it cause these problems?. Are there any known places where oil leaks commonly occur?.
    Many thanks in advance, Arthur

    Hey Arthur
I have an x7 and one of the issues you mentioned has happened to me. The throttle cable can be an issue, it's more to do with the path it has to travel. When the throttle cable leaves the throttle it is a single cable, then it hits the splitter and becomes 3 cables, one to each carb and one to the oil pump. My splitter got caught on a lug on the frame and caused the cable to be extended outside the casing which in turn caused super high revs. Because there is so little room along the frame which has the wiring loom, throttle cable it gets very congested. I would check this area 1st to ascertain if your are having the same problem.
As for the oil issue, check the calibration on your oil pump, could be your problem.
    Keep me posted.

    G'day Phil,
Many thanks for your reply and information. I received it 2 days ago, and yesterday had a look at the bike (even in the 44Deg C day!).
The throttle cable seems fine and there does not appear to be any obstructions - so far so good. However the oil pump cable is a little bit second hand. One strand of the inner cable was broken, and may have been fouling the outer (just where the cable end enters the metal adjustment bit) causing the pump not close down completely. I will order a new cable and replace them all.

Same subject, different question - when putting the slides into the carbs, the cutaway should face outwards (ie to the air filter)? I cannot remember exactly (should have taken a photo!), but have a sneaking suspicion that the slides may have been put in backwards.
    Still lots to chase up.
Again, thanks for the info - it got me started in the correct area.
    Arthur

    G'day again Phil,
The good news is that the "fix" (purely temporary) has stopped the oil in the exhaust - well done and thanks!.
I have ordered a new set of cables and once I get them fitted will re-set the carbs (and replace the connections between the two), and with a bit of luck that should be me ready for the road.

    Again, Thanks, Arthur
