Ok. If you've tried to turn the crank with a spanner as described, then I'm afraid it has seized. You described having revving problems before the bike stopped, this could be several things. The main one I'm leaning towards is a bearing has seized.

I'm sorry to say but I think its getting time to consider pulling her down and rebuilding or replacing the motor. <!-- s:angel: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_angel.gif" alt="" title="Angel" /><!-- s:angel: -->

$1000? probably a little high I would have thought, unless it is a proven very good motor. $1000 fitted might be the go. I suppose these things are getting rarer and rarer so by now a grand is probably the going rate.

a second hand motor.... do you think there is still anything to be changed with the bike or is it just the engine that needs to be changed?

Based on the information supplied I would say no, however an old bike being pulled apart typically will give up hidden problems along the way. I would say do not look at it unless you have around $2k just incase.

for $1500 the motor would want to be in bloody good nic- ask to see compression readings from each cylinder etc.

first check the clutch switch then the side stand switch and lastly the relays that controls all of the above they are prone to getting water in them and rusting

DO a quick test - Does the engine turn over if you put it in 3nd or 4rd gear and push the bike?

If you pull in the clutch, give it a big push in 2nd and then release the clutch quickly, it should turn over. If it don't turn at all then it really is seized.
