    In my latest dilemma.... haha

Hot starting is fine, cold starts give me nothing (won't even try to tick over), fuel pump clicks, press the button and NOTHING.

The battery has been tested and is fine so logic says something in the starter system.

What in the electrics (or starter system in general) is sensitive to the cold??

Any ideas would be appreciated. I've got new tyres and brake pads ordered to get a RWC next week so I'm hoping this doesn't turn into something huge, wish me luck!

Interesting you posted this today. Think my starter motor might have gone today.

Push starting is fine(is that hot starting?) battery is fine. Will watch with interest. Good luck.

I'm im Canberra and it was our coldest night last night too -1 degrees

Check the Starter solonoid, it's next to the battery box

Try a little percussive maintenance on the starter motor... sticky or worn brushes can cause it not to turn

or pop it in 2nd while its not running, rock it back and forth and then select neutral, turn the key, and try again, that might help you understand if its the starter motor.

So push starting works (lucky I've had plenty of practice). I can feel movement in the starter solenoid when I hit the ignition switch and the headlight/dash dims (current is being drawn somewhere) but still nothing.

I've noticed the solenoid for the fuel cap is pretty jammed up, maybe the starter solenoid is the same? Stripping it down was as far as I got last night with an early start at uni (along with refitting the original rear indicators for RWC). I'll be ripping in tonight after touch footy to hopefully get her to Wacol tomorrow for new tyres and pads!

Any good guides on the location of the starter motor? Plan is to follow the wires and I had a look at the picture in my photocopied manual but the pictures didn't show much.

have you shorted across the top of the solenoid with ignition on and in nuetral.if it starts solenoid is stuffed and if no start pull starter apart and rebuild.

Quick update, investigated the rear solenoid (for the fuel cover) and found it to be VERY sticky so fixed that problem whilst I was there. Leads me to believe the starter solenoid could be sticking as well. Chucked a screwdriver across the terminals and got a lot more action but after all the mucking around with it over the last 2 days, the battery didn't have enough charge to really do anything.

Bit late to be push starting bikes through suburbia so that'll have to wait for tomorrow morning. Next step, confirm the solenoid is the problem (suspicions indicating it is) and then fix it? I pulled it out to have a look but can't get into it, any ideas? Worst case they're $20 or less on fleabay.

Shorted the solenoid with a charged battery and still nothing cold so looks like the stater motor. Manage to get it into MPR at Wacol (great place, look it up) so new tyres are all fitted and beautiful.

Managed to drop it on the roundabout just outside the shop on my way there though, when it rains it pours hey? Just snapped the mirror (cheap aftermarket one) and grabbing a spare from my brother tonight. Scratched up the side and bent the gear selector but the clutch cover didn't crack through (thank god).

Stater motor is next to look at in my never ending story haha I swear one day she'll be ready for a RWC...

If the Voltage is dropping (lights dimming) whilst you're pressing the starter button but starter is doing nothing then I've also heard of a bearing in the starter motor needing to be replaced as it's not allowing the shaft to spin. (But this was on a dirtbike so it could be different)

Any tricks on getting it out? Looks to be in a pain of a spot.

How much for one of yours @kiffsta?

Happy to grab one tomorrow if it'll sort this problem out, the poor Across is my only transport so I need to sort it out properly.

SOLVED! Took the old girl into MPR at Wacol. In the end, it seems something got through the inline paper fuel filter/ a bit of it broke off and got stuck in the carbs. Matt ended up covering the air intake and the resulting vacuum suck the blockage through and got rid of it. Can't recommend the service enough down there, so happy to have her back on the road! Candi rides again!
