Suzuki Across fuel issues

    Hey Xtan
    First off, did you get the throttle cable back on properly ?  secondly,  try your carby adjuster and adjust it up a tad to see if that will allow it to start

    Throttle cable seems fine, where is carby adjuster located? There is another line with a Black plastic screw looking thing.. Is that it..?
    When I bought I, I was told carbys were just balanced 1000k before removal.

    yes its the black plastic knob that is on the left hand side of the bike

    How is it adjusted? Do I use a flathead screwdriver?

    Also I ended up adjusting the screw that is attached to the throttle cable, which allowed me to adjust idle, is that okay to adjust from?

    Bike is heaps better now

    My bike is finally sorted, I'd like to give a big thanks to chris and phil for giving me a big help along the way.

    I finally took the time to open my old carbies and look at what was wrong..

    I've given up, sending it to K-Tec Racing to have a look sometime this week or early next.

    Since i've changed over the carbies i have opened them and cleaned them and there is no damage visible, I installed it all back properly (I'm sure there is no air leaks), my throttle is not sticking however when i raise idle screw to anything above 1600rpm the bike idles itself all the way to like 3000-4000rpm and hangs there revving, it sounds like something is being restricted then when it finally flows it's revving its tits off (Cause leaks fuel comes out of drain bowls). Low idle seems fine (1100-1300rpm) but after a few minutes it dies by itself. I was told it was balanced before removal but i guess you can't trust anyone and i can't assume perfect as the throttle slider holders were already loosening up which i swapped over my brand new ones for, maybe that might have changed idle aswell.

    I've smelt more than enough BP98 petrol to reduce my life by 5 years, can't take it any longer. Pays to learn.

    sounds  exactly like the issues i had with my Across a few months back, in the end I took it to a mechanic and it took him 5 mins to set it properly. You wont regret getting them properly balanced and tuned. As for the edit button, you have 5 mins to edit your post, then it locks.

    Hey Chris,

    I don't have a trailer so i don't know how to bring it to workshop, i'm so relieved when you said it was pretty much exactly the same problem cause now i know it's mainly a tuning issue and that i don't need to replace more things!!!

    Last few days it's raining really heavily in Perth so i guess i can't really ride anymore :(

    It is rideable but i would say fairly dangerous as fuel will leak after like 5minutes of idle (maybe waiting at a traffic light) plus putting into 1st Gear whilst revving at 4000rpm isn't easy and i think slightly damaging.

    Any ideas?

    Hey James

    based on the info provided, I would suggest you dont use the throttle cable to adjust your idle, use the idle adjuster on the left hand side of the bike to set your idel at 1600prm. If you have a fuel leak, I would check the 4 screws on the bowls are done  up tight, also, check the gasket for signs of a tear or a leak. As you have a 2nd set of carbies, take them with you to the mechanic as you have spares in hand and it could be a worn jet problem

    My '97 Across has always does 100k to the yellow light and 170k to the red (with a bit more if I do country runs) and then about another 5 before it has to go to reserve. Just of late though it has been falling a bit short of this and I fear now that the red light may be broke as I think I ran out of fuel on a cold-morning start the other day. May need a carby/service to get things back to normal.

    If the across has any major issues, I would say it's the capacity of its tank.
    12 litres is simply not big enough considering that you are feeding 4 cylinders.
    But hey, if that's all that is wrong, its a great bike.

    Indeed, though i think the new CBR only packs 12L and gets nearly 300k range?

    Mine seems to go between 80k-100k depending on how i ride, though the range to red changes drastically, sometimes 150 sometimes 180. Wierd. Defo need to plow on with that fuel injection conversion!  ;D sick of carbies!

    Think we are on the same page, mentioned to Chris sometime back what a great bike the Suzuki Across would be with fuel injection. My Honda cbr 1100 is fueled injected and I have gone over 330k's before and still had several litres in the tank.
    I would love to see an across fuel injected, the increased mileage would be awesome as would be the power.
