I've posted before about the rich history that Tasmania has in Australian motorsport and motorcycling. Every time I attend any motorsport event down here I am always amazed at how many old bikes and cars come out of the woodwork. I saw this picture online and thought it was around a hundred years old and that some on here might enjoy it. It is actually a picture of the Luina Whyte River Hotel (circa 1920s), but all the bikes out the front made me think of mateship, adventure and hard work. I'm sure @Murdo will be able to name many of the bikes in the picture. There are a lot of BSA Bantams down here. it must have been a popular (and affordable) bike back in the day. I don't think they were manufactured until 1950, so there won't be any in that picture. Enjoy.

For anyone interested in riding around Tasmania (with Malcolm Campbell).

Ride Tasmania with Wally and the VJMC

VJMC Tasmania has teamed up with Malcolm (Wally) Campbell to offer a ride like no other. The ride will be for 6 day with all activities including a number of interesting shed visit and other bike location visits, accommodation, fuel and breakfast all included in the ride cost. Not to mention the great Tasmanian roads that you will experience. We are hoping participants will bring their Japanese motorcycles but if you can not get your bike to Tasmania Bike Hire is available.

If members are aware of anybody who might like to participate in this event please let them know about it. Full details are found on the VJMC webpage at https://vjmc.org.au/j40/

Ever thought you might like to circumnavigate Tasmania with someone who knows the best roads? This is your big chance. The ride which we have named “The Big Lap”, will be led by Malcolm Campbell and supported by the VJMC Tasmania.

This event is aimed at persons located outside of Tasmania in the hope of attracting them to our great state but participation is open to all. The tour commences in Devonport on Friday the 17th November 2023 and concludes in Devonport on Thursday the 23rd of November 2023.

On the conclusion of this trip, we will be heading to Hobart for the National Historic Race meeting at Baskerville on the 24/25/26 November 2023.

The Historics will be a great event and I hope you all can attend. We will have our VJMC Marquee there and we look forward to seeing you all.

Hey Chief. I probably wouldn't do the tour as Murdo and I did all of those places (and then some) when we rode around Tasmania a few years back in an anti-clockwise direction. But, I could meet up with participants in Launceston or wherever your first night's accommodation is. I am keen to go to the Historic Road Racing meeting at Baskerville.

    https://www.ma.org.au/baskerville-to-host-2023-australian-historic-road-racing-championships/

As for after party, I'd be able to put a couple of people up after the tour if needed. We're an hour from Devonport and about 45 minutes from Launceston. The closest town to us is Beaconsfield (10km away), so I am close to the tour start and end location. I reckon the tour would be a perfect run for you and the Tiger.

    Information, Itinerary and costs

The 2023 Tour of Tassie will go around the state in clockwise direction we haven’t been this way for a while! With something new around every corner.

The tour is over seven days. Starting out of Devonport on Friday the 17th November 2023 so people can come over on the boat Thursday night and return the following Thursday 23 evening/night or stay around for the Australian Historic Championships at Baskerville in Hobart on the 24/25/26 November if staying on its at your cost and up to you to make your own itinerary for this part.

The Spirit of Tasmania bookings are at your expense time of sailing and return if having trouble on the web site call the booking office. This year as last there is an overall price which covers your twin share accommodation, hot breakfasts and all fuel on the trip, extra if you want a single room, it also covers your fuel so it’s easy at servo’s just keep pumping on a couple of pumps one bill it also covers admittance into several we must pay visitations situations.

So, nothing to worry about only getting to Tassie and for those from far away don’t forget there are hire bikes down here. Booking on the boat get it done early!!! More old cars and bikes to look at in private collections! As in previous years not too much detail on what we are doing or going to see there is lots and sometimes needs to be modified to suit time constraints and adds to the mystic of the tour and Tassie.

You won’t be disappointed and go home in amazement Tassie has lots of history in the making of Australia having the second and third oldest city’s in and along with that comes old cars and bikes and history you won’t believe. We won’t start the list it’s too long, Richmond Bridge oldest in Australia, it goes on and on.

Come on let’s get started we are only here once and we are already running out of time get on with your bucket list and if Tassie isn’t on it then it should be!!!

Tour of Wally’s World - Itinerary

FRIDAY the 17th November 2023 Look out Launceston. I will be at the boat at arrival time in Devonport to welcome you and those that have arrived early this will be our meeting and start point we will have a coffee or breakfast or whatever takes your fancy not far away. I’ll get you to sign the usual indemnity, if not done previously, and we will head into the Wonderful World of Wally! Ending for the evening at Launceston or nearby. Check out my Facebook page to see what we were up to last year. If you haven’t a Facebook log in Goggle Wally’s Wonderful World or Tasmanian Motorcycle Tours or Malcolm Campbell any of those should log you on the page, check out other people’s posts and great photos

SATURDAY 18th November 2023 Launceston to St Helens. Doesn’t look far on the map but there’s more than one-way to skin a cat so they tell me. Plenty of surprises on the way!

SUNDAY 19th November 2023 St Helens to Hobart. Lots to see along the way we have the opportunity to visit Australia’s oldest national park weather permitting. Visit Richmond and Australia’s oldest bridge which we ride over as its still in use onward to Hobart via some old bikes and another big night in Hobart, actually most nights seem to get big!

MONDAY 20th November 2023 Hobart to Strathgordon. Down the Huon to some special bikes unbelievable actually through some scenic roads lunch in Hobart and some great roads lead us to Strathgordon Dam and lake Pedder for our overnight stay an amazing day. Strathgordon should be one of the engineering wonders of the world.

TUESDAY 21ST November 2023 Strathgordon to Strahan. A great night to really get to know each other around the meal table. Today’s ride keeps us busy, we will visit a huge wooden pipe line still in use amazing engineering also the Wall in the Wilderness through mining towns and twisty roads to arrive in Strahan.

WEDNESDAY 22ND November 2023 Strahan to Burnie. Through the history of Zeehan over Reece Dam finding our way to Burnie. We travel over many of the closed sections of Targa Tasmania course another great day

THURSDAY 23RD November 2023 Burnie to Devonport. A great day once again on the scenic coast ending the day at what I believe may be the highlight of the trip and then end up in Devonport close to the Spirit for your return if not staying over for the Australian Historic Motorcycle Race meeting in Hobart. Launceston has the oldest sewerage system in Australia the first hydro power station in the southern hemisphere and can’t let this one go the second oldest continually running motorcycle club in the British Empire, that being the Tasmanian Motorcycle Club est. 1905.

Total price of the trip is as follows:

    Twin Share accommodation is $2,000.00
    Solo single accommodation is $2,400.00

Payment: $300 deposit is required by the 17th AUG with the remainder by the 17 OCT For a pillion the price is $1600 with a $300 deposit If anyone has payment problems, please talk to me about it.

I noticed this posting from the Tasmanian Police and I was wondering if any of the mainland cops would be so proactive and appreciative of motorcycle riders. I hope to intercept the tour at some point along their lap and take a few pics to post here.
