Police are warning residents selling motorcycles to be cautious when allowing potential buyers to test ride their bikes after a string of recent thefts in the South East.

Investigators believe the same man is responsible for stealing at least five motorcycles during test rides on the Sunshine Coast, Brisbane and the Gold Coast since December 18.

On four occasions – in Sunnybank Hills, Woolloongabba, Salisbury and Pacific Pines, the man arranged a meeting with the seller after seeing the motorcycles advertised on an online classifieds website. He then takes each motorcycle for a test ride and does not return.

On the other occasion the motorcycle was stolen from a Kunda Park dealership during a test ride.

The man is described as being Caucasian in appearance, aged in his early 30s, about 185cm tall with a solid build, short brown hair and brown eyes. The man has a tattoo of a fish on his right arm and a wizard on his left leg.

Anyone with information regarding the man or his whereabouts is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Anyone with information which could assist with this matter should contact Crime Stoppers anonymously via 1800 333 000 or crimestoppers.com.au 24hrs a day.

Crime Stoppers is a registered charity and community volunteer organisation working in partnership with the Queensland Police Service.

For all non-urgent police reporting or general police inquiries contact Policelink on 131 444 or Policelink.qld.gov.au 24hrs a day.

I once posted on this forum that I ask for full cash payment or some other collateral before any test ride. I prefer the cash though, because if it turns out they don't like the bike, I'll be happy to hand over the cash.

There was this story of someone getting their bike stolen (same problem) so he posted up his other bike and waited for the guy to text him (he got a different phone). Anyway, the stupid crook gets baited to check out the bike and he shows up with the bike he stole from the guy, and the older guy on the back (two people involved in it) and the owner of the bikes had the cops already in on it and they recovered a bunch of other bikes after they arrested these two guys. This story was from Atlanta in the US.
