One of the things that has been bugging me with the CB400F is the VIN tag is badly worn where cables etc have been rubbing and if doing a proper restoration (not concours but as good as I can afford) that would be the one part I couldnt get... then I accidentally happened on an item in eBay that has made my day.

I have this on order.... it is coming from India of all places...lol
Anyway, now all I need to do is find the right sized stamps to make my replacement VIN tag :)

There were plenty of them for the USA, UK and Europe but none until now that had the Australian Compliance numbers etc. It is really just to make it look nice as the original is still readable... just.
As you can see from the pic below - actual VIN has been blanked :)

Getting the correct stamp's is pretty hard as most are stamped rfrom the rear.

There's a guy that make's a sticker to go on top of Ford XR XT i/d plate's,
you just clean up your original plate with scotchbrite, fine steel wool or polish, and the new sticker goes on over the top with new writing and boxes etc, it look's original (scanned off a brand new replacement id plate) and is very hard to pick the difference.
I have one on my XR Fairmont now as most of the writing had rubbed off.
He sell's them for $12 inc postage.

Might be able to have one made for your Honda somewhere ?
Take a decent photo, have it scanned and everything cleaned up, then get one or a few printed off
Then just clean up your plate and stick it on

Mine is definitely stamped from the front as can be seen in the VIN below (found this one on the net :))
The frame is stamped so as long as the number on the VIN plate matches the frame it is all good... these Honda 4's didnt have matching numbers so the engine number will always be different.
My number stamps appear to be the right size and the font is very similar...
In the end it is just for looks...

Clamp a stick of wood with a straight edge along the plate so the numbers will be in a line and don't hit the stamps too hard, practice on some scrap aluminium first.

No idea why he sells them in 3's, might be an Indian thing...

I have to say, it is 3rd time lucky for me. Couldn’t be happier and she is even supportive of my bike addiction, to a degree anyway
