Fumb = fun^dumb A good friend of mine talked me into giving MiniGP a shot. He even lent me a bike to race on. My 5th time on a track, my first on a mini (klx110), and my first attempt at racing. Out of the 7 races I entered, I placed in 3! 2 3rd place finishes, and a 2nd place. I was well into my 4th trophy on the last race. The last race I was in for all novice racers, but doing the track backwards. On the grid I was 16th out of 18. Going in to turn 1 I was in 5th! The last turn of the first lap and I am 3 seconds behind the leader in 3rd and catching up. I took the inside line and the bike decided we should part ways. By the time I got the bike kicked over (4up transmission, and converted to manual clutch didn't help me figure it out in a panic) I was in 17th. Such is racing!
I take it this is what the bike you're building is all about? Do you keep it as the original bike or do you/some put the engine is a more track-focused frame?
Oh, that looks like too much fun. I'll just sit here in the corner telling myself I can't afford anymore hobbies...
HAH! Forgot I posted about that here 6 years ago. Haven't won a formula class sprint race since! Engine goes in a stock frame until I am bloody rich (BBR perimeter frames are going for $8k USD). Chassis has been "upgraded" to kx65 front end with a 12" hoop. .75gal aux tank for front number plate. The bike I've been posting about is my endurance bike. Also have sprint bikes: klx110 (125cc), nsr50 (60cc+, wont' know actual displacement until I take the head off for service), cbr125 (bone freakin stock but stripped almost to a mininum), xr50. Not enough YSRs show up for a spec class so that one just rots in the corner unloved. It's all fun and games, until you take a grom to the chest!
I was thinking people might stick the motor in an NSR/CBR/RS chassis or some such. Even an rs80 or something. I think it would fun: small track, KX 85/65 in a zxr frame... I'm halfway there!
The tracks we run at are better with a short wheel base (i.e. 12" wheels). Show up with whatever HP on 17s and someone will make you cry with less HP on 12s. Also this motor is for an endurance bike. 3h45m (solo riding...) would kill me on a small sportbike chassis. Motard is much more comfortable for my stature. Probably worth mentioning I'm doing this more for the learning experience, than the $2 trophy at the end of the day and a trophy/t-shirt at the end of the year if I place in the top 10 overall...
