Hey people!

I will be selling my FZR by the end of this week which leaves me with a problem... I won't have a bike to ride

What would you guys suggest as a good step up from an FZR250. I am fully licenced now so I am not limited power wise (although i don't really see myself wanting anything more powerful than a 600).

My mechanic recommended the Suzuki GS500 because they're cheap and reliable. But i'm wondering if I should splash out and buy an R6???

What are your thoughts?

You'l find a gs500 isnt much of a step up up, being learner legal here in nsw they still lack a bit of power and you'l be losing a disc off the front. hmmm... seems to me like everyone else is correct R6 R6 R6 R6!!! javascript:emoticon('')

My honest advice would be to steer away from the GS500 unless you want something that is about on-par with your 250 but with a smidge more power. The suspension and kit on the GS500 isn't really 'modern' by anyone's standards, and i know the first thing i was looking for when i got off my 250 was an upgrade in power but more importantly suspension.

Depending on how far you can stretch your budget i'd recommend looking at 2000+ bikes with EFI and decent suspension;

Sporty bikes with fairings...
- GSXR600/750 (2001+ is EFI)
- R6 (2003+ is EFI if i recall)
- Triumph Daytona 600/650 (they go rather cheap these days now the 675 is the king of the hill)
- ZX6R (2002+)
- Honda CBR600F4i (sensible but reliable. Pity they're expensive cos the stunters love them!)

More sensible nekkid bikes
- Suzuki SV650 (the squared up ones like Dave recommended)
- Kawasaki Z750 (FANTASTIC bike and they come up at great prices!)
- Yamaha FZ6 (beautiful smooth engine, very user friendly)

Hope those suggestions help.
It's really just a matter of figuring out what you can afford and then ticking things off the list.

Thanks very much for all your feedback guys.

Choosing my bike is gonna take a little bit of time. I'll have to work out how much money i'm able to save once I start my new job.

Dave the Suzuki looks like a fairly well price bike bike, thanks for your recommendation.

What would be the main difference from the 2 cylinder suzuki to a 4 cylinder bike?

The recent model R6 and GXSR 600 still take the cake on looks though. I am in love with those stubby exhausts!!

The V twin - Obviously the sound (need appropriate muffler but nice sound). There is a lot more engine braking, when I get to a town speed limit just roll off the throttle and down the speed comes almost instantly. Torque delivery is solid from 3,000 - 10,500 with a slight peak from 5,000 up so you dont have to keep in the top end of the rev range. At 110k on the highway mine sits on about 5500rpm. Good manners around town as 1st gear fairly low. Fuel injected and about 75hp at the back wheel.

The SV is a budget all purpose bike so it is not as refined in the suspension as the new GSX-R600 or R6 but they are $5000 less (new). The SV suspension mods are simple. GSXR triples and forks fit the K3 onwards models and the same for the rear monoshock with minor mods.

Should be able pick up a good second hand unit for $6k for a K3 up to $8k K7 model.

K3 is the start of the EFI models

They are not everyones cup of tea so try one first - in fact try a lot of bikes before you buy.

absolutely try different bikes and not just different sports bikes, try naked bikes, touring bikes, v twins, inline 4s, V4s, and find what your comfortable with, every riders different and you'll never know until you try. I would budget for around 8 g's as from 8 - 12 you can get some descent bit of gear, most with efi.

and happy test riding I seriously wish i was about to get another bike .

Have fun
