Hey guys and girls, ive been thinking of getting bar risers for the across. Seen some that look ok but then I had a brain fart. maybe change the bars themselves. Now I cant weld to save my life so I would be getting them made. but i was wondering if these would work and if so what would I need to be able to do it. ie- type of metal, would chrome add thickness, or anything else I might need to know before going down this path
interesting, just watch the length of your cables and wiring for your switch blocks , you need them tostretch full lock and back the otherway
It would be fine so long as good welds. My ST1100 has welded bars similar to that from the factory. Use mild steel tube of 22mm diameter with a wall thickness of at least 2.5mm, preferably TIG welded. This can then be painted or plated (chrome is usually only .03mm thick). If you wished to use stainless steel, be careful that you use a grade suitable for the stresses/vibration, and again TIG weld. Stainless can then be polished to look like chrome.
what murdo is saying is that stainless can stress fracture. chroming hard steel can also do the same.
This is really good info guys thanks. any idea where id find mild steel tubing. I went to masters today and they are mainly pre made stuff.
One more question. if i were to bend the steel instead of cutting and welding, would the bending cause too much stress on the steel
bending will cause stress and the tigter you bend the more stress.if an exhaust shop does the bend it can be done gently.
Just an update on this. Its not going to work. I must have forgot that the handlebars turn. The controls and break fluid reservoir would hit the fairing near the windscreen. I would have to also modify that, then something else and so on till I have a completley new bike. But it was fun to play around with the look a bit.
I know what you mean Andrew, at one stage I looked at getting some different riser for a bike I had. It looked real easy at the time however I had not given any or enough thought to cables being stretched to the limit. Not a huge issue but some hydraulics hose had to be lengthened as well. So like you, I had a fiddle and decided to leave alone, kinda fun while it lasted.
