Hi guys - about to remove my head off the XJR400R - No.2 exhaust valve(one of) is being held open, hopefully just by carbon - so I’m removing the head as we speak.

    any tips for head maintenance?

My two cents: Clean, inspect & measure everything. Don't use gravel for valve grinding paste. Make sure your head is flat and fit new gaskets and seals. If you can't afford a head gasket then sell the bike now and buy a step through. :)
