Do some fiddly stuff on the SRX today. Filled it back up with oil and after cranking her over for a bit I decided to see if it would run. I filled the float bowl but it wouldn’t pick up the fuel so I used some brake cleaner and it roared to life. Seems I have a few carby issues as it wouldn’t run long enough for me to grab my phone so no video evidence for now but it sounded really crisp. Even with the muffler on it was loud so I may need to find a better muffler. The good news is no oil leaks this time. More to do but making progress. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
Carby off today, I am pretty sure I found the issue... Main jet wasnt screwed in all the way and the float level wasnt right. Set the float as per the book and then checked with the level gauge from the bowl drain and it is pretty much spot on. Hooked the carby back up and hit it with some Aero Start just to get it running initially and it wouldnt run... no spark WTF?? Went through all my connections and I found 1 that was green inside... all cleaned up and plenty of spark and bingo... https://youtube.com/shorts/1tiPlH5s384?feature=share I need to get some fuel hose so I can run it from my external fuel tank (Ali Express). I am not sure if it is charging so I really need it to run long enough to get that info. Still, this is a good step in the right direction.
So, a little further up the road with this one... I can get it running for a short time... carby has to come off again as I have a leak when I hook up my temp fuel supply. I just cant see exactly where it is coming from when it is on the bike. I was at least able to check charging rate and at fast idle (Choke on) I am getting 13.5 volts so it is charging OK. I would love to put a LiPo battery in it but I am not sure on the max charge rate from the old 1987 Generator or how much control there is from the same age Rec / Rec. I certainly dont want to overcharge a LiPo battery but I would like to have the extra Amp hour and CCA that they give... she struggles a little with the higher compression 350 piston
Back on the SRX, Carby is off again.. float bowl gasket seems fine and the oring is still in place. I rechecked the float level and it was 2mm above max setting (could have been the issue) so re-set that. I couldnt test the fuel level against spec as I put the rest of my fuel into the CX500 before I sold it... Doh. I also found my Aprillia triple tree (well I knew where it was) when I tidied up and made a start on the stepped adapter for the SRX lower bearing. Sketched it up in Freecad and have printed off a few versions on the 3D printer for trial purposes. Slight changes to dimensions to get it to fit. Looking at it I could possibly get away with "just" a spacer on the bottom and use the same bearing on the bottom as on the. top (25 x 48 x 13) but the load capacity would be a lot less than the standard 30 x 48 x 13 SRX FZR items, Now to get a set of bearings so I can do a mock up with the Aprillia forks and wheel... I think I will get the engine running properly first... FOCUS is required to get it finished before any other changes
