Hi all. Been thinking of going p6 racing for a long time. Forget 250 production two strokes they are ******* expensive now and going up by the week. I have boiled it down to a zxr250a. Good power, reasonably solid motor, cheap, plenty about, upside down forks etc. Anybody have one, had one, had a good or bad experience, know what to look for in one etc. I will be in market in approx. 4 to 6 weeks. Just got a 750 gixxer to sell. Might even sell the 600 track bike too. I have an rs250 also but dont want to sell that.
The gotchya's with ZXR's are the stators & reg/recs, carb t-piece o-rings and vacuum lines, carby boots, 18" rear rim limiting tyre choices, and the timing chain tensioners. As for getting any dramas sorted. Stator - get it rewound. Small Coil Rewinds comes to mind. Reg/Rec - Shindengen FH020AA. Used on a lot of triumphs these days. Available from: http://roadstercycle.com/ Carbs - Litetek carby kit, new vacuum lines, genuine carby boots available $100 for the set. Cam chain tensioner - Get Kawasaki Part # 12048-1106 from partzilla. $50USD delivered. Manual tensioners may be available. The tensioner part number is for the old Ninja 250's / GPX250 Rear rim - ZXR400 or ZR250 Balius 17" rear rim. Sprocket and disc patterns should be the same but never tried it myself. In the standard sizes, your best bet for tyres are Dunlop GPR300 / Dunlop Alpha 13's Other than that, just the usual stuff on old bikes... years of neglect, lack of maintenance, backyard hack jobs etc... Have I missed anything?
NOS parts for A models are pretty thin on the ground , have you considered a CBR250RR ? the Motorcycle Sportsmen of Queensland have a p6 category where 1990 models are allowed and hey have a very large number of them racing 95% of them are MC22's , it has gotten so popular that a 2nd race has been added to each meet. Have a look at http://teamtiger.com.au/ , @simidau has some great vids of the racing and had a great write up on prepping the bike
Hey mate, Yep since posting this it looks like MC22's are the go. No great model changes from 90 so most of the range is available for the class. Seems a wicked class to get involved in. 90 - 93 unrestricted so defo the model to get,. Also eligible for QRFX SS400 Sporties production and F3 and of course P6 historics. can race every weekend if you want. I have been told to speak with Simon Dixon from Team tiger so I will do just that. How exiciting is this class and the numbers its attracting. Cheap and fun is what its all about.
