so since i got my zxr i've redone the wiring and confirmed that all 4 leads are delivering spark, i've replaced two broken spark plugs so that all four are now sparking properly, i took the entire engine apart today to have a look at the piston rings and cams and valves and stuff and everything seems to be all good. turned out the previous owner had completely misaligned the camshafts but i fixed that

now she is ever so close to starting up, but still backfiring when i try to start. did come very close to firing up tonight after i'd put the engine back together though

all i can think of that could be wrong at this point would be the spark plugs going a little too soon or too late, is there any way of adjusting the ignition timing on the zxr like you would on an old car with a distributor cap? otherwise what do you guys think i could have missed that would get the engine going?

    thanks

It's not adjustable , are your plugs in the right order ?

they're in the order they were in when i got the bike (could be wrong though considering all the other things the last owner left incorrect)

here's a very professional representation of how my plugs currently are plugs.png

On the FZR's that would be wrong. Cannot say for ZXR. On the FZR, each coil pack does 1 left and 1 right. Eg, coil pack 1 does cylinder 1 and 3, coil pack 2 does cylinders 2 and 4. Am I making sense?

Swap 1 plug lead from each coil pack and try again.

i suspect it may be wrong since the pistons in cylinders 1+4 as well as 2+3 are synchronised on this bike, so if one coil gives power to both of its leads at the same time (which seems logical to me) then one coil would be to 1 and 4, and the other to 2 and 3

are the pistons like that on the fzr too?

Just swap the leads on cyl 2 & 3 and see if it starts. If it does, no point in wondering why :thumb_ups:

    Looking at your drawing
-coil pack no.1.....1st lead to cylinder 4
-coil pack no.1.....2nd lead to cylinder 1

-coil pack no 2.....1st lead to cylinder 2
-coil pack no.2.....2nd lead to cylinder 3

cylinder no's go from left to right 1st cylinder is 4...next is 3.....then 2 and finally the cylinder on right hand side is no.1
The way you've drawn it, the bike will no fire. Hope this helps

Sitting on the motorcycle, Cyl 1 is on the left, then 2, 3, 4.
1&4 are one coil and 2&3 the other.

Sorry mate, my bad. Cylinders are starting on left 1-2-3-4. My caps have a tag with a number attached and that's what I could see in the dark. This morning checked my zzr 600 manual......Blair is correct.
