ZXR has vacuum petcock (doesn't it?) so should only leak or let fuel through if faulty or set to PRI.

It sure does, so that means over time the petcock has leaked, the float valve o rings have leaked. I assume the engine was hydrolocked then the fuel passed thru the rings into the sump. @timmeh01 how long was it sitting?

Fuel in the oil adds to the explosive experience.

Two years! And it was sitting on 'prime' which means fuel can just spew out without the engine on.

Bike runs like a dream now :) After changing the oil (which had petrol in it) everything started working

Just make sure it's not still got a slow leak... if it's got a vacuum petcock it could mean your petcock diaphragm is buggered (alternatively float levels in the carbies, or an o ring problem). I'd be sampling and sniffing the oil on the odd occasion to double check...
