Also, I'd like to say thanks to 2fiftycc.com for the downloads (manual, Tightening torques, etc). Learner in every sense of the meaning when dealing "anything" motorcycle related -- bought the Zeal based on minimal engine knowledge and specifically because of the 4 cylinder grunt. Great to learn on being 6'3" 95kg and doesn't quite have the power to break you into a sweat, but will give you enough grunt to kick through the gears quickly enough. My first bike, I've not much experience, but rides well enough for me to take to riding into the next level (provisional licence). The first mod I'd think to make would be the seat.
Thanks, managed to get some good info about the bike here. I'm around the inner-city, South. Please, excuse my shyness, but seems there isn't much of a scene at the moment too... not that I'd know.
You know what, reckon I might be one to have to look at that. Just finished with a good mechanic now, and he says the carburettor seems to need a work over, engine seems fine. Says, 10k revs and it starts to choke out. Also, didn't help that I put V-Power in the tank, it's running rich. 3-4 hours + parts. I prep'd by buying tools etc, before getting a bike, but a bit of a blindside with this one. Fork seals: $350 (done) Rear Tyre + Horn: $245 (booked for next week). No drama, I'm still keen. For those buying a first bike, do thorough checks with a check list. I was just a little too keen...
My friend, your mechanic has charged you around $100 to $150 too much for the fork seals. He is not doing any favours on the rear tyre and a $10 horn either. Also don't think V-power is making anything run rich. I would grab your phone, coupled with what size tyre you require and start doing the ring around, am certain you can do better price wise. Check E-bay for a cheap horn. Good luck.
Just lost a torque wrench today with a $109 parking infringement powern' on. And you're right, I'll see to making some calls and get to know a few things. Was hoping for decent safety gear and a few more hours up... Dreamer. Also, the mechanic I saw this morning is different to the fork seals/tyre/horn, cause he was booked out, maybe he said the 'fuel was too rich'. Off-street parking, limited somewhat to simple maintenance. Should have a basement lot next week. And then can think about the carburettor and wrecking the joint
Actually, $101 - Disobey no parking sign. Slightly on-side of that sign, where opposite side reads 1P-4P Only a hair off ! The outcome of this is that I've never contemplated parking issues, and so now I'm familiar... Mate it wouldn't hurt the pocket more than its already been flogged But what I'm thinking of is learning to service the carburetors myself, would have to make a thread to ask around the forum etc. I've come across this injector kit from ebay, since I'll be in there tinkerin' away, and I have a few questions about it... and about float seals... I've gotta read up. I'll take it easy on the bike and just do what I can, if all else fails then likely you're the point man Cheers.
Welcome to the community. To keep some of your money in your pocket your first move is to avoid mechanics at all costs unless absolutely needed....especially walking in blindly with a problem and saying "can u fix it" .... as u have already found out. Motorcycles are pretty easy things to work on ....as for working out a problem, that can sometimes be tricky ....especially with carbs and especially having 4 of the bastards. As long as you have a little space and some basic tools u can do most things especially servicing. And theres a ton of experienced people and resources here to help and guide u in the right direction. If youre talking about the jet kit on ebay save your pennys ...... jets dont need replacing or upsized or wateva .... they just need to be cleaned and checked they are correct and size hasnt been changed by some dopey previous owner. Japanese engineers know alot more about building a bike than we do. First thing is to buy a set of these and save yourself a world of pain ..... http://2fiftycc.com/index.php?threads/koken-jis-crosshead-phillips-screwdrivers.1469/ Next when u hit the carbs buy this ... http://litetek.co/Carb_Kit_Yamaha_Zeal.html And follow this .... http://2fiftycc.com/index.php?threads/mikuni-bdst-assembly-guide.2092/ http://2fiftycc.com/index.php?resources/categories/other.24/ As u mentioned , start a thread on your carbs .... have a camera handy and ask questions. Be meticulous with the diassembly and cleaning. Even if u havnt a work space , the dining table works well and u just eat off the floor ....when u own a bike it takes precedence over all else including your wife and kids. As far as fuel goes again save your pennys with the V power , ultimate or wateva super u beaut name the companys give their product. The FZX is a detuned version of the FZR ..... u wont break any land speed records..... just start with 91 then try 95 and see how it runs ...... preferably after the carb rebuild. Before putting on clean carbys make sure the tank isnt full of crud and the filter is new and fuel lines are new or at least in good shape. You will find alot more useful advice and information here than at a bike shop /mechainc..... and it wont cost u a cent.
Laid out well, GI. An appreciated effort once again. As for the girl and kid, that horse bolted years ago and still far out on her own right. Though space remains a real factor still to be contemplated. A moment I'd regret is someone's kid going rogue in the apartment's basement lot for shiny new things... a simple cover may sort that. So, It's a good kick start, and what I'll do now is remove the seat, maybe the tank, and see what I can pull up from just that. I bought a decent socket set, plenty of screw bits and very basic/small spanner set. JIS crossheads I'll have to see to it. By the way, the fearing encompasses some interesting (if not dopey) home job mods for sure. A lot I didn't pick up on. Maybe can get some good pics out from under there just to rack the timbers. ... more right than a corporate slogan.
Notice the wire? There's one either side... DIY 101 Actually, for me quite unsuspecting. Done with such elegance
My Fizzer had cable ties at the side cowlings and roofing screws at the front .... the ZXR had a few wood screws. I guess if we didnt have such innovative POs about, we would have nothing to do but shine our wheels Your bike looks good in general ...can u post up a couple of pics of the whole thing?
If I can get it stable It'll save me well as a first bike. So, should be alright for a few year if I can maintain the condition. Right now i've gotta put back as one and take it out for a breather. Last night I forgot the fuel tap, had me for a minute, but this is also the trait over 10k revs. I'm thinking injectors (as the mech suggested) and must be running lean, contrary to my first thought of it running rich. Not that I'd actually know. The advice that's pouring in, yours specifically, is turning out to be quite a motivator I needed. Diagrams are helpful too, thought the numbering not so logical for me.
* serve me well, not "save me" well! Damn mobile phone spell-checker. But since we're on the subject of "saving", WTF is this: How do I get it off? I'm an IT guy dammit!!
laundry powder! Looks like you've been busy carbs are definately a fun thing to get right...... Good luck there are alot of people on here rebuilding carbs atm that can help you out
We cover everything on this forum ..... http://2fiftycc.com/index.php?threads/whats-the-best-stuff-in-australia-for-washing-your-hands.2005/ That bike looks in good shape
