Bike hates winter

well bikes not starting again in the mornings since this cold weather came in. Sounds like it wants to kick over but doesnt.

checked battery and it sits at 12.4 ish and high 9's when cranking (is a cheap non sealed one)

spark plugs are pretty new about 9k old, valve clearances are good, carby's haven't been cleaned since i bought the bike (over 20 thousand) but it still runs well when warmed. Old owner had them rebuilt not long before i got it and the fuel tank is pretty spotless.


basically need a checklist to go through as it once its started its all good. Not to sure about the battery as i know the 250's need abit of cranking power.

plus i think a huntsman is living somewhere inside it and dont want to find out where.

 

Agreed, get a battery with perhaps a little more cranking power, you won't regret it!

also had a couple huntsmans surface on my bike, was gonna take a pic of them for ya but they were moving fast so i didnt have time. also dinted my fuel tank because i hit the spider to hard.

 

only one less huntsman?deknacker and spare us.lol/

 

got a new motobatt battery, holds charge well only dips to 11.3 ish when cranking, still a pig to start, might get new plugs and if no change at all rip the carby's off and clean em out.

 

Good choice on the battery, just fitted one on the Bandit.

 

excellent battery and can be recharged if left for months.check plug and coil leads.check for corrosion on power lead to starter and solenoid. contact cleaner works wonders.

 

definetly gonna have a look at the starter, might clean up the earth aswell and clean all contacts i can get to easily.

pretty certain it isnt the carby's as once it is started it idles cold without choke, valve clearances are good aswell, certain it was the battery and just cranking it without it kicking was flooding the engine.

next paycheck i will get a litetek seal kit and give the carby's a clean with the threebond cleaner anyway.

 

Does your choke work? Because if it idles fine and runs fine after starting, A little bit of choke should get it going in the cold. If the carbs were rebuilt already I wouldn't do it again.

At most I would up the pilot screws 1/4 turn to richer the mixture a tiny bit as it's colder ATM.

 

yeah choke works fine, usually use the choke to get it to fire in the mornings then give it 2 small revs and it idles fine, it already is running slightly rich.

just cleaned the terminals and noticed the bit that goes on the positive terminal has over half the wires broken, might fix that tomorrow.

 

so i fixed the posistive terminal and put the new battery in and it fired straight up, might just replace the positive lead if i can get my hands on one, got rego coming up then after might take the carby's off and get into them.

 

im really after the lug, cant find one anywhere that is at an angle. The lead itself is fine but i can only get the lug i need if it comes on a wire.

 

I'm having the exact same problem with my fizzer. But I have a new battery. But you can't use throttle or choke on startup otherwise it floods. I know that this is problem that needs to be fixed but in warmer weather / late morning / afternoon or at night in the garage. It will fire first time without fail.

Not even a roll start will do it. Runs for a second then Fizzers out (haha geddit?) but will eventually start on a particular place on the forecourt at work every time. It's a mystery.

However, there is an electrical fault with the bike, the indicator flashes REAL fast, so fast it looks like it's stuck on, then slow down to just plain fast. Not sure if the throttle has an effect on this yet.

 

Do you have led Indicators? As you need a flasher unit.

hit choke on my zxr and it shoot right up to about 6-7k revvs lol.... not cool in the morning (sunshine coast inland jungle/rainforest) when normal people are trying to sleep
