So I was trawling on gumtree to a minute ago and came across a FZR that said "One of the fastest legal learner bikes". Now I have actually seen this one a few FZR GT listings and it puzzles me. Is there such a thing as the "Fastest learner legal bike" I mean, really? Now in the interest of simplicity let's stick to the 250/300's here. My neighbor across the road has a Suzuki 650 sports tourer that has been de-tuned to make it LL. And of Course you can buy these and cruisers de tuned up to 600/700 because they don't have that "Raw power". So focusing on the 250 side of things, is it really just sales talk to sell the bike (I think so) because let's face it, we like to say "Oh, it's got <insert figure here>hp" errrrm, no, no it doesnt. Not now at least. When she first rolled off the line, yes, but circa 20 years and umpteen thousand kilometers later, the engine is not as tight as it once was, and it ain't displacing the same figure. But even putting that aside, someone buys a relatively new or newer bike. Is there really much difference in performance? MEASUREABLE difference? I doubt it. That's why it's "learner legal". LOL (I genuinely laughed typing that) Being realistic I don't think there would be much (if any) in performance margin (focusing on the sports bikes here. Cruisers may do 120). Or maybe my ignorance of the working of bikes is getting the better of me? I doubt it, because the physics of mechanical wear is universal. So over time an engine in a car loses power, so they would translate to bikes as well. "Fastest Learner legal." Is it real, and if so, what is?
cb400 i think, 0-100 in 4 odd seconds. rvf400 are also quick bikes, you can get the bigger bikes and de restrict them if you really want to, but i think the learner scheme is a good thing for new riders, 3 years is a abit excessive though.
Well naturally some bikes are quicker than others so there will be a fastest learner legal bike. Just because there learner leagal dosent mean they all go the same speed. I think the big factor is the weight of the rider when your talking about a 250.
But going from days when I got restricted to 250 only the nsr and other 2 bangers were the fastest and still would be hence not LAMS anymore
yes/no, I know my zxr does over $1.80 and was faster then a ninja 250 to 100km/h, then theres the handling where one of the 80s race replicas will out corner any of the newer stuff. It as always comes down to the rider but I do believe there are faster Lams bikes then other lams bikes.
the zxr should get to 100 in around 5 seconds if you launch it hard enough/ dgaf about your clutch, but obviously the 250 range werent made with speed in mind.
For one the actual race bike seating position meaning you will out lean them if you have to, better shocks and forks and they are lighter. You have to remember these bikes were race replicas not the current crop of commuters in a pretty frock.
also the zxr's have the adjustable suspension.. so technically if you wanted to set up the perfect suspension for the way you ride the bike.. it would make handling better in corners and there for faster... but you can get speed triples now that are lams approved.. http://www.bikesales.com.au/content...iple-660/lams-triumph-street-triple-660-41559 which boasts 40.6kW (55.2hp).... and because it is a triple it would be extremely torquey but i reckon you could unrestrict them and get them back to 106hp
Correct .... the FZRs etc of that era were the first race replicas and laid the foundation for the future 'sports ' bikes that evolved .... which, in the 250 class these days , as Hunstman points out , are no inline 4 screamers!
What's the Kwaka 250 sports bike? I thought it was an inline 4. Though they sound like an Asthmatic puppy.

Mine does the same. Could have searched my pocket for another 10c, but what's the point, I'm not going to get change back.... They are 650's. Not the 250's. I suppose what I'm asking is, is one 250 lams bike faster than another 250 lams bike?
The engines all put out the same HP.. so it would come down to things like riders weight, weight of the bike, gear box ratios, sprockets, chain tension and tyre pressure.... all the little nitty gritty things that are fine tuned by laps and laps on the track with a crack mechanic who knows his shiz.... thats my opinion.. also comes down to what bike you prefer...
Took the Hyo out for a test ride today .... goes well , smooth , comfortable ...easy to ride ...gets up to 120/130 pretty easily. How does it compare to the Fizzer ? ..... well it has 2 wheels , a tank, a seat , handlebars , an engine .... and that's about it Theres just NO comparison in performance The Fizzer makes your testicles tingle ...... something like the Hyo ... never
