I admire anyone who restores a bike back to original condition, but that doesn't mean you can ask silly money for it when you're done. I wouldn't pay more than $3,000 for a mint VT250F let alone $4,500! I've got a ground up rebuild VT250FD with average paint and plastics and I'll end up putting on Dumbtree for $1,795 ride away!

People forget that although beauty may be in the eye of the beholder, sale prices are usually proportional to the market...

If you're stupid enough (or passionate enough) to over capitalise on a bike well that ain't the buyer's issue haha he/she aint normally gonna pay for it all.

That's may be so, however, at the same time, where would you find a bike in that exact condition? While it's always only worth what someone is willing to pay for it, a buyer has to always ask:

"What would it cost to restore the same bike to the same condition?"

    And:

"Do I genuinely have time to restore this bike"

Look at how many bikes wind up on GT as "unfinished project, don't have time to finish it" in the description.

While the base project may differ in starting condition, you have to also account for inflation of prices on parts (so AUD, general availability of parts, as well as general inflation since the equivalent parts were bought). Really when you look into it, it's quite complicated.

When I'm finished with my bike it will be a no money to be spent finished project and it will be priced as such if I ever do sell it. Not at the price of the rest of damaged-OEM-fairings, cam-chain-needs-replacing, carbies-need-rebuilding, stator-scratched-up, needs-tyres, FZRs that are out there. And I would challenge any prospective buyer to find a bike anywhere near the finish on mine at a cheaper price.

But we all just look at the bike as <insert bike model here> and what we can buy another in any condition for.

The other factor is, the people who ask above market prices don't need to sell.

They're all valid points you make Revolver and I think for the most part many of us agree with you. The particular bike I was referring to (1983 VT250F for $4,500 with RWC and REGO) was just a little too much for me (personally). It had one mirror on it...for effs sake, buy a pair of replica OEM mirrors for $50 delivered and close that gap. The engine has 28,000km on the clock...that's good, but what's the compression figures? The pictures showed the paint and decals to be in very good shape and the entire bike looked very clean.

In the end, as we all say, it's worth whatever someone is prepared to pay for it.

    Cheers

What I’m saying is that it’s all emotion and economics. For the buyer the emotional choice is (1) do I like the bike then the economic choice is (2) can I get it at the right price for me. For the seller it is (1) can I really part with this after putting so much time and effort into it and (2) can I get most of my money back (noting that most restorations are for passion not profit).

The sale will happen where there is a crossover between the two trains of thought between the two people involved. I personally don’t care how much a seller has spent, I only care how that money has been spent as that influences my decision.

Each to their own I suppose, everyone has their own strategies depending on what they like.

Tongue-in-cheek Murdo. No way a 250cc would be able to turn that rear tyre. I always wanted to get a laydown frame or pro stock bike frame and build a 250cc proper drag bike, run it on ethanol, msd ignition etc and see just how fast it would go. Would fit into D/MB class. Alas, my ambitions are often greater than my talent!

You have to take your hat off to the Kiwi's. They're up for anything. I read an article about re-phasing cracks once...from memory it was done to a Hayabusa to make it a "big bang" engine...more nutty Kiwi stuff!

I know Frank, but maybe two engines would? :idk:
Then Kiffsta showed me that someone else has already put two 250's together so that was the end of that idea. Back to the belt drive MEC then. ;)
