I have an FZR250 engine that came to me minus alternator, trigger (and alternator cover) no loom, no ECU. I will be installing the motor in a dirt kart I will purchase one of the cheap FZR250 ECU s and a pickup trigger on ebay. It would be nice if I could find a used alternator cover/trigger pickup to buy, but it will be no trouble to make a trigger-mount and get it timed right if I have to I have the pinout code for the ECU , I already found that on this website (thanks) I will run the engine with total-loss battery power supply (no alternator required in this application, just charge battery between race meetings.) BUT I need to know what steps to take to deal with pins 5 and 6 Which I can only identify as "SS' and "FP" ( bear in mind I have no bike or wiring loom here, this is a standalone installation in a racing Kart) Are these pins "sideStand" and ???? lockouts that will prevent the ECU from working? If so, what connections do I need to make to defeat the lockouts and allow the ECU to function? Do I just run "SS" and "FP" to ground? Or do they need a resistor?
Not sure if it will help but theres some info here and electrical drawings https://2fiftycc.com/index.php?threads/electrical-drawings.7001/
Those diagrams definitely helped. FP goes to the fuel pump relay ( probably grounds the relay, I will test), and I think SS is Engine Stop Switch, also to ground. The ECU will probably run without connecting either of them, although i will definitely use the FP output as it will turn the pump off when the engine stalls etc (as in crashing). Thanks mate!!
Be good to see some pics of the FZR motor installed in the kart .... or even showing it running when u hopefully reach that stage ...
Will do. I have a kart ready to take the FZR. I will need to weld an outrigger to the frame to take the wide motor. Will also need to move the seat to the left. This is just a fun project ,it will never be a winner at our track (too heavy), but it will for sure win the prize for best sounding kart. The fast kart is the one in my avatar pic, thats powered by a KX250F MX motor.I build the chromemoly frames as well. I am amazed at the cheap Chinese parts for these engines, ECU, pistons, rods, bearings, valves, etcetcetc, all so cheap!. Not that I need much I dont think, the oil is clean and it turns over smoothly, so I might give it a go without stripping down.. It came without carbs so will get a set of 4 Chinese Mikuni or Keihin flatslides, ..they even make the oval-port inlet manifold rubbers! for about 7 bucks !! I enjoy making tuned-length exhaust manifolds so looking forward to making this teeny weeny little set.. When fitting a motorcycle engine to a kart I make the mounts out of 2 x 12mm thick alloy side plates bolted to a cast slider-block and clamps. I have a hobby foundry where I cast the mounts from wooden patterns. You might have figured out by now I am retired !!
Hi Sammy, That sounds like a great little project. I am interested in your hobby foundry set up. Could you post some pics as it might help others to set up similar facilities. Cheers Peter.
Yep. When I cast the FZR mounts. I dont use gas. just barbeque charcoal and a hot-air gun. Each casting only costs about 5 bucks.. The sand and clay powder can cost a bit if not available locally, but are reusable
"tuned-length exhaust manifold" Look forward to seeing that ! I did a quick hack job on my road riding FZR when it was retired to the drag strip and 'quiet' is not required in the mix anymore
Yea it sounds mighty fine to me It only managed 1 meeting before covid hit Ignore the woeful take off ... but even with the hurricane wind noise she howls at max RPMs
They have twin post coils https://2fiftycc.com/index.php?thre...eads-spark-plug-configuration-inline-4s.8176/ Ive converted mine to coil packs but have yet to start it let alone run it If u check out the COPS thread u will see plenty of info on this https://2fiftycc.com/index.php?threads/coil-on-plug-conversions-cop.9631/
thats perfect info thanks mate .......using wasted spark on my V12 quadturbo jag using Ford 6 post coils which are 3 twin-posts moulded together one for each bank
I am making progress getting the parts to make the FZR250 run, I now have an ECU, coils, inlet manifolds. Just looking at the ignition stator pickups (trigger) available on AliExpress. They do not list a specific pickup for the FZR, but they offer generic yamaha-style pickups in 2 different resistance , 200 ohm or 500 ohm. Does anyone know which of these would work. I think the pickup mounts onto the flywheel cover (which I do not have), but maybe someone could test the resistance of their trigger (pickup) for me...or have the specs?
