Hi Guys, I have ordered a couple of gaskets for the GSX250 they are genuine suzuki ones, I just wondered do I need to apply any sealant or do I just fit the new dry gaskets? Sorry I could probably check the internet but I am reading mixed things, any info would be awesome! I am eager to get this engine back in Thanks
Cylinder and head gaskets - no - but it would be a good idea to have the head and cylinder cleaned up, checked for flatness and decked if necessary. For rubber type gaskets... o-rings go on dry if they are sealing oil. Valve cover gaskets - people say they need sealant but I find that to be a lazy method. My opinion is that a perfectly clean and dry valve cover gasket surface shouldn't need any sealant at all, but still, if my boss tells me to use sealant then I will do so. For my own bikes... no thanks.
yeah this is just for the rocker cover and the magneto casing - ill try dry and hope it works Thanks for the info mate - I appreciate it
ok they mag cover gasket feels like paper / card so ill add some grease to this one, I haven't received the other one yet
Sorry to threadjack, but what is the logic behind greasing paper gaskets? Can't say I've seen it mentioned in factory service manuals, but then again there is a good chance I read right over it.
What @Andych said I started using grease on paper gaskets as an apprentice in the early seventies coz that is what my mentor did and it is brilliant. Dry paper gaskets suck, and service manuals, at best, say what to do but not how to do it. I was going to go on one of my psycho rants about dry gaskets and sh*t new bikes with nothing lubricated. Yeah, what the hell, I always feel better after a good rant. I remember seeing a post on a forum saying 'nothing feels like a new bike', what a load of crap. Here is a pic of the clutch lever from my brand new Yamaha XSR155, two weeks after I bought it.
