Help Failed Lic. inspection - A couple of Questions!

    I had my bike inspected for licensing in WA Yesterday.....

    It failed...

    The reason? The front forks are too soft - apparently the inspector could get the forks to bottom out during emergency braking....

    I did a travel test using a cable tie around a fork & the maximum travel I could achieve resulted in the cable tie ending up 35mm from the base of the fork leg, perhaps he's a bit heavier than me?

    The preload is currently 2 clicks off maximum.

    Anyway, I planned to do the fork seals as par for the course - so I have a couple of questions about my ZXR250A.......

    Does the oil level spec in the 'C' manual apply to my bike?

    Has anyone made up an addition preload spacer for their ZXR?
    What did you use?
    What thickness spacer?
    What was the result?

    Fork oil weight - I've been recommended using 10 weight fork oil rather than the factory spec 5w - thoughts?

    Although not directly related to a ZXR, most forks will by now need spacers to regain ride height or new springs (the better option) as they will have lost some of their tension and 'sagged' through age and use. I have used things like washers, old handlebar cut to short lengths, the plugs from holesaws and even 20 cent coins. Try different bits at say 10mm at a time to see where you want to be at ride height wise.
    10wt (or even 15wt) will help to stop dive under brakes, but will give a stiffer ride with more jarring over road lumps. Try 10wt and see if you like it, if not go to 15wt. If too stiff try 7.5wt. Also adding more oil can help with diving, maybe 30cc more per leg and try.
