And just adds to my usual call of 'beware of Mr Mechanic'

And heres my latest experience and relevant as it involved rego failure and instant repairs needed .... the mechanic who did this was the rego inspector also , making it even worse

My Land Cruiser failed rego the other week ... a crack was found in the panhard bracket next to the steering box ... a common thing with the 80 series in this part of the chassis
So sure , great they found it .... so $900 later it had the special plates welded in .... and I had to have a new rocker gasket as it was leaking ... which I had ready as I was going to do it myself eventually ... but had to be done to pass rego

So got it home afterwards .... coolant pouring out of the bottom rad hose .... they hadnt tightened the hose clamps ... also intake hose clamp and a few other things not tightened or not put back correctly .... but worse of all was the welding job ... woeful is being kind ... and they hadnt replaced the bolts that were now too short after adding the 2 chassis plates either side of the steering box..... and this was all done by the head mechanic/ rego inspector

Anyway needless to say I demanded a refund to go elsewhere and have it done properly .... which thankfully the owner complied with , without me having to resort to abuse and threats of violence

And they call themselves a "4x4 specialist'

Photos speak for themselves ... it took 2 guys , nearly 3 days to redo it all

all i can say is a friend of mine with a little used off roader had his tyres knocked back as they were 10 years old but still had near new tread depth.that vehicle goes out of the shed at most twice a week and the speedo never over 100km per hour on the highway.the rwc supplier puts a sticker on the windscreen to say roadworthy for the next 12 months and signs it. never seen done before.
